The sound of Aphex Twin and others

The new aphex twin ablum was just released and I think it has some of his best stuff (though i dont think he’ll ever top the richard d james album) Anyway im startihng this thread to discuss Aphex’s sound and other artist whos style is simular.

mu-ziq (or u-ziq some kind of funny u) is pretty good along the same lines. Iv down loaded a live DnB set of his that is worth getting. If you can find it on your mp3 downloading program of choice id recommend it.

Squarepusher is probably one of the better artist’s in this style. I even read a rumor that Aphex had written stuff under his name??

A little bit more obsucure is an mp3.com artist I found called Iron Rayer. The sound is pretty orginal but he needs better song titles, and the sound is pretty under produced.

Thats all I can think of right now … Any of you know anyone along the same lines?

That would probably be [sym]m[/sym]-ziq, using the Greek letter mu.

Aphex Twin are the ones that mixed Underworld’s Born Slippy with Pink Floyd’s Comfortably Numb, right? That was cool, but I don’t know much else about them.

Aphex Twin man also doesn’t get particularly large amounts of critical acclaim. His music is of the polarizing variety, either you love it or you hate it. Rarely do you get people who find it blah. Often times, people hate it.

I like a couple of songs but a suprising majority of it sounds exactly the same (i.e. crappy).

I’m one of the people who find it blah.

I loved the Outsdie Kickass Violin Solo, but otherwise… well, combining sounds from tetris and synthesizers doesn’t really send me.

SAW II is one of my all time favorite albums. Beautiful stuff.

aphex twin, huh?

yeah, that’s some crazy stuff. if you aren’t aware, he also works under the name afx, power pill, analogue bubblebath, caustic window, etc… the only reason i can think that a rumor like he was operating under the name squarepusher would come about would be because they both had videos directed by the great chris cunningham, but as far as i know, squarepusher is a completely unrelated, although stylistically similar, artist. i might suggest oval and matmos to someone interested in the twin, but i would also suggest people like karlheinz stockhausen, great pioneer of experimental electronica, and even some songs by bjork have some really aphex-like beats.
oh yeah, and i would have to say that the album “i care because you do” is his best by far.

For the record, my favorite is Selected Ambient Works Vol. 2. Interestingly I was at Midway International Airport the other day and they actually played alonst the entire album on the PA in the main terminal. It was a really wierd feeling. I guess it is soothing and innocuous, on the surface, (and played at such a low volume), but there is some really dark stuff in there.
