I like it - Charlotte is a sweet name. And I’m glad they threw a Diana in there, I was afraid they wouldn’t because of Charles.
I’m happy for the royal couple. Their incredibly artificial environment aside, they seem like decent folks. They clearly care for one another, no artifice there, and they seem as down to earth as possible given their circumstances. I’ve never forgotten the shock and sadness on the two young princes faces when their mother died. I’m happy to see Will with a loving family now.
I’m glad they didn’t give her Diana as her first name. That would be a lot for the kid to live up to.
When she’s a grownup, will Princess Charlotte eventually be Princess Royal?
She will have to wait for Princess Anne to die, and Anne is only 64 years old. So it will probably be a couple of decades.
According to wiki, the title is customarily given by the monarch to the monarch’s eldest daughter. So she might have to wait for William to become king. That’s going to be a while.
Both the Alices in Queen Victoria’s direct line of descent had the misfortune of being hemophilia carriers and lost children to it. In fact, I think Princess Alice of Albany (Leopold’s daughter, who died in 1981) had the distinction of being the last surviving carrier of that royal gene. Just an odd note.
Charlotte Elizabeth Diana is a lovely name. I approve. Not that my approval matters one whit.
I too got Charlotte Elizabeth, but guessed the third name would be Mary. Charlotte could also be for the other grandmother, as it’s a form related to Carole, the name of the maternal grandmother.
Pretty much OT, but since we’re speaking of names, I wonder if Will would have been allowed to marry Kate if she had one of those twee names like Tiffany or Brittney or Candy? I’m betting there would have been a squawk about that. Kate was lucky that Katherine is a proper monarchical moniker.
I don’t know why this annoys me, but it does. Did William not know his cousin was named this, not care, or something else? I guess I just hate Earl Spencer thinking they imitated him, if he even does think this.
According to the article the Earl of Spencer is quite happy with the situation, so maybe there was a family discussion prior to the decision? Or maybe not. It’s not unheard of for cousins to have similar names.
If the parties involved are happy then so am I.
It’s a pretty name, all of the names are common, I don’t think people should call dibs on a name, and everyone is happy. I get too annoyed at things that don’t concern me, and this is no exception!
They should have thrown Camilla in as a name, just for fun.
It’s not like Wills and Kate have as big a name pool to draw on as Earl Spencer, and given the Earl has seven children (plus two step children), he’s taken up more than his fair share of names.
Or, given that equal primogeniture is now the rule, King William V could buck with tradition and create her Duchess of York in her own right when Prince Andrew died (granted he’s a decade younger than Princess Anne).
Monaco has a princess Charlene.
I have a little Charlotte so I love the name.
Denmark has a Princess Athena.
The Dutch royal family has a Princess Ariane, Princess Luana and a Princess Zara.
Not to mention Queen Elizabeth’s own granddaughter Zara.
Diana was by no means a regal name.
Actually , I was kinda hoping for Hermonie.
Declan
Her Highness Princess Athena of Denmark, Countess of Monpezat.
Nothing about that sounds like it’s out of a comic book at all. And if you suggest otherwise, her dad will smite you with a thunderbolt.
People seem to be assuming that the young Princess Charlotte is named after her grandfather, the Prince of Wales, but there are at least two Charlottes in her family tree: Queen Charlotte, the consort of George III, and her granddaughter, Princess Charlotte of Wales, who would have become Queen if she had not died in childbirth at the age of 21.
kate’s sister has charlotte as a middle name, and her mother has elizabeth as a middle name.
