I was going for ‘Demented Minds Think Alike’, but either works.
The wasp killer guy was just here and advised they are yellow jackets, who become rather peevish at this time of year. The nest is built into a tarp I had stuffed in a corner of the shed. They’ve gone to meet their maker, now, although I was advised to give it a few days for the stuff to finish the job.
One of my earliest memories is of picking up the pretty yellow and black bug that was crawling on the window sill. Didn’t end well (for either of us, probably).
Got the shopping done. Housekeeping has come and gone. Dinner will be soup that the niece brought over on Sunday.
Weird experience in the elevator today. The staff put together a Halloween party this afternoon. Nothing says ancient and sad to me than a bunch of seniors putting on costumes, and there is always someone trying to pin a decoration on you or put a fucking tiara on your head, so we generally avoid these sorts of activities. Anyway, I’m going down to get the mail and a woman in some sort of getup says to me, incredulously, “You’re not going to the party?” I answered no, with a smile. She then asks, rather indignantly “Well, why not!” I was a bit taken aback by her vehemence, but said “It’s just not something I’m interested in.” Her response was “Well! Alright then!” and she stomped off the elevator in a snit. WTH?
Positive note: I got the coffee I ordered from Coffee Bros. Very nice single source brew. Expensive, but it was marked down 75%.
I went to the back to ask why my new CC isn’t showing up on the bank’s website. Turns out, it’s managed by a third party company called Elan Financial. The bank manager said I could download it to my phone, blahblahblah, to which I replied that I didn’t want anything dealing with finances on my phone, and I also wanted my balance automatically paid off every month. And if that wasn’t possible, I’d be cancelling my card. He assured me that it was possible and told me how to accomplish that. I’m still not sure about having a third party involved, but we’ll see how it goes.
That… is the most accurate and concise explanation of the differences between bees and wasps I’ve ever seen! Thanks for posting it, fly boy!!
That reminds me of one of my (altogether too many) pet peeves: In Oregon, for some reason people have the bad habit of referring to everything that stings as a “bee”. It’s rarely a bee that stings. It’s wasps. And bees don’t bite. Wasps do, though, so they can flop back and forth and sting you repeatedly.
It’s all I can do to keep from slapping people when they ask, “Are your bee bites better?” Maybe I should bite them instead.
Thank you, I’m sure they need anything you can share.
I doubt I would ever hang my clothes out to dry, you couldn’t do that in AZ, the sun and wind would age the fabric years in a single day. Now I’m just too dang lazy for that.
I’ve seen clotheslines being used on a regular basis out here. It always entertains me when I can tell that the (probably) woman who hung the laundry out has modestly put all of the underthings in the back, away from the public eye.
Well, except for the neighbor just outside of town. She’s a witch. I can tell because her big bloomers and socks are hanging right out in full sight instead of hidden behind her dress.
Halloween and fall decorating are big here. Bigger than xmas TBH, but I think that’s because its easier to do a big display when it’s in the 50’s than it is when its in the 30’s and snowing.
Thank you, we are so happy that they are so well matched. (that’s an older pic, it was just the latest one I’d bothered to put on flickr)
I agree, very cute.
I hope you Findus settles in soon.
That looks very nice, please take more in the spring!
I’d be peevish if I was going to die in a few days too.
A tip I learned for wasps is they will keep coming back to the same spot as long as they can smell their mark. So, after removing the nest, spray the area with vinegar or bleach or whatever you have handy.
So I use plastic bins under the sink to hold cleaning supplies. That makes it easier to pull them out when needed. I just went after some furniture oil and found half a bin of water. Hubs is trying to figure out where the water is coming from and I need to start paying attention to the back door. It is far too wet out for him to be messing around in the crawl space. The leak isn’t that bad, I haven’t polished the furniture in several months.
I do have a question before I go. While I was at the grocery store today I saw a bag of Italian Bean soup mix so I bought one. (that aisle has been better stocked in recent memory) Hurst’s HamBeens, but I can’t find a product listing.
So, I read the instructions and all of them mention that they are no-soak. While there are no pintos, they are still beans. Don’t all beans need to be soaked to help avoid the fart fest?
I’m going to soak them, just because they are soft doesn’t mean they are cooked properly.
They’re jerkwad assholes with wings! I had some fly up under a loose t-shirt and sting my torso before I could tear the shirt off! We hates them we do!!!
Change of plans - FCD is going to buy some teak tomorrow to rebuild the swim platform, then he’ll bring the mast home. After that we may or may not clean his shop. I’ll be running to Food Lion first thing, then, you guessed it - LAUNDRY!!! If shop cleaning doesn’t happen, I may start transplanting liriope. We’ll see how the day goes.
I didn’t get the knee injection. It was the first time I’d heard that there’s a non-zero chance of getting an infection that puts me in the ER. And it might not work anyway. Ibuprofen makes my knee stop hurting, so I’ll try to remember to take it. Wifey, RN is upset with me. She thinks I should have known that any injection (including the flu shot I received today) could result in an infection. I told her I’d schedule another appointment, and she told me not to. Anyway, the PA said he could refer me to an orthpedic surgeon.
Party went well. It was a combo Halloween and 50 anniversary for one of the partners. It was a surprise for the partner. We have lots leftover for tomorrow. We shared with the night crew. Barely put a dent in the leftovers.
I didn’t win the contest we had some good costumes. A witch costume won. Apparently the big boss was not a Star Trek fan. Ah well.
No meetings tonight, thankfully. On to tomorrow and trick or treating at the building.
Ms Peach was medium good today. She hates the rain, and it was pouring this morning. I got her outside cowering under my umbrella to pee. She wouldn’t #2, too stressful, but biting the raindrops was ok (and pretty cute). She then actually held off all day while I was at work and went once the rain stopped and I got home.
She did eat a sock last night, and woke me up at 4:30, so that’s why she only gets a medium. Plus the sock made today business, shall we say, interesting. Strings etc.
We start dog school next weekend.
Yes yellowjackets are assholes. As a kid out looking for golf balls I stepped in a nest. Something like 50 sting up one leg, 20 on the other. I have now, some 40 years later developed a pretty bad allergic reaction to stings.
Cookie Some people are like yellowjackets. See above.
FCM Oofta on the cost of African Teak. Hope it’s not too spendy.
I’ve always found answering that kind of question with a Why do you ask? It throws all but the most obnoxious.
Sis and I found another thrift shop and discovered the other Food Town and a Giant Dollar. I came home from Giant with a few things for the apartment that you buy at a dollar store instead of Lowe’s, da Jungle or someplace that will charge you 2-3X the price for the same thing. Groceries are bought and put away and supper et. I nuked some of the curry that I made the other day and it packed a little more heat than it did the first time around.
Howdy Y’all! We did all the things. Go Us! We loaded up a cart and a half at Wally*World:open_mouth:. The nice nun at NIN was happy to get the stuff. She said they expect to see many more folk showin’ up for food. Hopefully others will be generous as well. OYKW and I have decided to do this on a monthly basis because, fortunately, we are able to do so. We’ll still take some stuff to the church, but I think buyin’ some stuff in quantity and takin’ it ourselves is a good idea. As is our wont, we spent the rest of the day in RDOS inactivities.
And a good early evening to all. Soccer got cancelled for tonight, guess the fields are still to wet, so they’ve reshuffled the games and the season may last until Tuesday now. Not a big deal, got all the exercising I planned to do at the gym done and will have some dinner here in a little bit, no rush now. 53F at the moment but heading down to 38F tonight, so no reason to be outdoors that I can think of.
And catching up from the morning…
cookie, now you have me wanting to look for some good rye bread (I do get Lewis Hearty Rye in a half-loaf, but I bet what you have is miles better. And you’ve done more than most parents to help your kids out, they’ll manage without it.
Don’t have any major problems with wasps (they were interested in my mailbox a few years ago but have gone away). FIre ants are the major pains here, we check the soccer fields pre-games for any nests so the kids don’t get bit.
Wouldn’t know since I don’t have one. May ask my PCP for a referral, it worked out great for my hearing.
Bright Tree, hope the gate was easily repairable.
FCM, I use a local Wal-Green, they also keep good tracking on the rare occasions I log in there. And nice pics, looks good and it gives you something to work with. Happy boat shopping.
JtC, hope your leak is something easy to fix.
flyboy, knees are always hard to take care of. Hope it works out.
VanGo, if nothing else, having Ms Peach around will get you to put your clothing out of reach…
red, sounds like you’ll have no trouble finding things around there.
And need to get some sustenance, then watch the tackleball game on Amazon Prime.
You are some very fine bears and I’m proud to call you my friend.
Do be sure to ask the nice nuns who say NIN what they really need.
Well…we know where the water is coming from and we know what needs to be done…but we’ve aged out of that sort of thing so the only effort will be writing the check. Which sucks, we have better things to do with our money this time of the year. Or any time.
I can still remember those awful days of sitting around in a laundry room or laundromat and waiting for the machines to stop sloshing around. While I didn’t mind sitting around and reading, nothing else was fun.
I did it twice when we first moved here, and then found a fluff and fold service until our machines got delivered.
Worries. Do dogs risk getting blocked with strings? I’ve known of people who have lost cats over that, but never thought about dogs before.
So it has been raining all day and of course got very dark very early. I love these sort of days, I love watching the rain and I have a good reason to stay home and not talk to anyone.
My baby bushes (which aren’t nearly as big as Mooom’s) are getting a nice soak. They aren’t showing any growth, but I’ll bet there is a whole lot going on underground.
My stoopid garlic is sprouting which isn’t making me happy. It’s only the bag in the back yard, not the one in the front so I guess this is going to be a learning experience. Moving to a different world sure is keeping my brain working!
