The spooooookiest MMP

Shoe, I had bifocals for a few years. Then I got cataracts, which was solved by synthetic lens implants. For the first time in 50 years, I could see clearly without glasses. Science!!

are you myopic?

bifocals are more difficult for myopic types. the stronger the prescription, the smaller the sweet spot of clear vision. then that small sweet spot is made smaller by a bit of magnification. contacts and readers work well together. or having your regular prescription and get a pinch the nose reader to slip in when you need magnification.
cataract surgery is an amazing game changer when you are myopic.

meeting 1 was last night. 4 of us were there, the 5th person did not show up, and they were the one who had the keys for where we needed to go. the 4 of us were productive in other ways and did get some things fingered out and settled.

on to meeting 2 tonight. this will be a “road” trip. not too travel y. i will meet 3-4 people at the shuttle stop, we will go to a store to look at their elevator. then go back to our building on the next shuttle. wild times!

Good morning.

It’s 39°F and raining lightly. The rainfall should end around 8:00 a.m., but the day will remain cloudy with a daytime high of 53°F, and rain will probably move in again around 7:00 p.m.

Shoe, they may have aligned the bifocal part of the lens (even if it’s no line) improperly. I’ve worn bifocals since my 20s. They were hard to adjust to for the first couple days, especially on stairs, but things finally aligned. However, if you continually have problems, it may not be you, but the glasses.

VanGo, very cool! I really hope they find a way to keep you there past the new year.

FCM, good on you for all the meal prep. I’m sure those meals will be very much appreciated. And, yes, having a dog (or dogs!) does make service calls difficult, especially if they are pups or young and very curious.

Metal Mouse, yay for another item on the checklist done and dusted. Now the new car can live in the garage!

BooFae, I’m sorry you’re still feeling so crappy. I hope that you start feeling better soon.

I finally received my retirement passcode letter, but not the actual welcome packet with the CSR number. Maybe that’ll arrive today. Apparently, the passcode letter arrived over the weekend. Hopefully, the other stuff will be there today.

I pulled the trigger on electric bikes for my husband and me. I’ve been mulling it over for quite some time. The bikes I wanted went on sale, and I knew I’d keep making excuses not to get them, so I did. I got a new bike hitch rack, too. We’re having them delivered to a bike shop for assembly. My husband is super excited about these bikes and spent most of yesterday researching reviews and trails to ride them on. It’s nice to see him stoked about something. I, on the other hand, felt slightly sick to my stomach after the order went through. I always feel that way after spending large sums of money.

I got this for myself, and the stepover version in black for my husband. E-Bike

When it was all said and done, I spent a tidy sum, but I know how tightfisted I am, so I did it. This will be our Christmas present and retirement present all rolled into one.

I don’t have any grand plans for today. I’ll probably knock out the laundry and maybe take a trip to Costco.

Okay, time for more coffee. You all take care!

I was coming here to say the same thing but taters said it better. Take your glasses back, have them checked that they are the prescription the dr. wrote. If that matches then tell the opticians that you might need the ‘sweet spot’ repositioned-the glasses aren’t working for you.
:

My sister made beef tongue when I was a kid. I didn’t like it. But, I love lengua tacos; so it must have just been the way she made it. I’d make it myself, but I don’t know how. (And haven’t seen any in the supermarkets.)

We did one roasted and one smoked one year. I roasted one, and I think a neighbour smoked the other one. Smoked was OK, but not as good as the one I roasted. As for size, there are only two of us. A 10-pound turkey is plenty. Just try to find one!

Good morning all. Up about 7:00am, have put the Purple Heart donations outside with a sign, broken fast and will shortly embark on the car-registration and other duties as required. 53F now heading to about 60F and probably won’t see the sun all day. Hope to get all the running around done before noon-time and have the afternoon for sloth, but we’ll see.

You two… :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

shoe, I had to do bifocals for several years (now have ‘progressive’ lenses in my glasses) and I know the feeling and will forbear saying anymore as I do not want to be smashed.

Sticky Buns, sorry for the tooth problems, I’ve never had crowns recommended and after your experience I’m in no hurry too get any. Hope work gets easier and sleep comes faster and longer (ummm, that doesn’t sound quite right…).

Boo fae, I’ll ask the obvious, why does he need it on pink paper?

FCM, saw a joke on Facebook, where a person heard a McDonalds employee call out “order number 867” and instantly replied “5309” and nobody got it…so yeah, we’re all getting old…and I always associate ‘making the scene’ with the “Sultans of Swing” by Dire Straits.

Taters, good news on the electric bikes. I look forward to hearing your reviews, I have thought about them now and then, but like you pulling the trigger is the tough part.

ANd it’s 9am here to need to get dressed, start the dishwasher and head out into the landscape to do the needed adult-like things. Take care all and have a good 2sDay.

I went to sleep at 9:30 and woke up at 4 a.m. I’m still in bed because Sir Charles will want to go for a walk the instant I’m up. The complex does NOT want dogs peeing on the grass, and I do NOT want to navigate the little woods beyond the gate in the dark, as I’m afraid that trees might throw apples at us or that cutthroats hide behind every pine, whichever is less likely.

Today is Charlie’s last day with me. I’ll miss him. He’s good company and so very easy to take care of. I’ll miss the cat, too, but not as much, as I’m only with him 30-60 minutes a day.

Just a note for those who may not have caught it from the photo: the skeleton mice are chasing the skeleton cat. I thought they were kittens at first.

shoe, I have never had to contend with bifocals, partly becayse my vision has been so screwed up. When I was in my 40s, I had cataract surgery. (Steroid eyedrops to prevent rejection will give you cataracts if used long-term.) The surgeon decided to use the implanted lenses to correct the left eye for reading and the right one for distance. They’ve each had an additional lens placed since then, and those lenses have not been corrected that way, so basically, I’m confused.

Bifocal soft contact lenses don’t require that adjustment you hate, as I understand it. I don’t know what they cost, though. Sigh. I’m no help. Sorry.

Regarding E-Bikes, BIL got one, FCD assembled it for him and took him to an empty parking lot to learn how to ride it. Then BIL parked it in his apartment and there it’s stayed. He’s terrified of being stopped by the police for some reason, so he pretty much wasted $1600. FCD wants us to get a couple for on the boat - maybe we’ll offer his brother a few bucks for his.

Landscapers have been at work for a couple of hours. They’ll prep the area today, then plant and mulch tomorrow. After they’re gone, I’ll make sure they’ve prepped the whole area so I can call Jason if necessary.

All food prep for Mom is done, including printing out instructions for my non-cooking sister. Back to crocheting, I guess.

I’m okay with haggis, actually love beef tongue, but the liver and onions have to go.

I wore bifocals for ~20 years before going to trifocals for the last 20. The biggest issue that I ever had was if I got called to pull something from the upper racks with a reach truck in the warehouse. Tilting my head back to see the rack put me squarely in close up lenses and made it difficult.

Gee, thanks for the earworm (it could be worse though).

Or have an 18 pounder who thinks he’s a Rottweiler and has to protect Mom. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yay! Appendages crossed for getting the CSR number today. Oh, and cool bikes!

When I’ve done it, I boil it with a sachet of whole cloves, whole peppercorns and bay leaves and add a couple of glugs of cider vinegar to the pot. Then, I skin it and pretty much shave it for sandwiches.

Up, caffeinating, breakfasted and fixing to do KP. After getting sheveled, I may hit Aldi up (I didn’t yesterday when I was out yesterday).

I’m fixing a South African fish curry (pretty much an Indian curry with a South African spin) tonight for the first time and serving it over quinoa. I’ll sauté some calabacitas and onions on the side. Other than that, RDOS today.

Stay safe and healthy y’all!

Eh, I’ve had contact lenses in the past. For many reasons, glasses work better for me.

Oh, I haz a sad. If I’d been there, I’d have giggled.

If that means nearsighted, then yes, very much so. Throw in some astigmatism for funzies.

That doesn’t sound boring; it sounds delishush.

I understood very few of these words.

{ Otis has entered the chat }

{ blinks in Murrican }

That’s really nifty.

Whelp, after yesterday’s sadness about missing breakfast time, I went out & got a Wendy’s square “croissant” a bit ago, just before they stopped doing breakfast stuff.

Came home & made a cuppa Earl Grey, which is what I really wanted this morning. Sammich is still sitting sadly in its bag, thinking about its life. Honestly, I went & got it in honor of Yesterday Shoe and in hopes that I’d want it later, when they (and everyone else  ) no longer serve breakfast stuff.

I want my eggs & bacon, dammit! I just … want them around 5 p.m.

I guess there’s IHOP …

Breakfast burritos on this rainy morning. A beautiful sunrise:

Drove over to Walgreens to pick up the wife’s statin med. It was blessedly quiet there and I was in and out in about ten minutes. According to nurse niece (and doctors) everyone over the age of 65 should be taking statins to help prevent stroke.

The drive back was a riot of fall colors in our neighborhood. Had to keep reminding myself to watch the road, not the trees.

Well, that was easier than expected. The banking was simple enough, deposit a check into my savings, but the State DMV was almost empty (unheard of this close to the end of the month) and it appears I had the right paperwork so that was only 10-12 minutes. Then GEICO took longer to get to their office than it took to remove my old car and get my rate set for the new one. Was not expecting this high level of efficiency so am back early and have time to browse around the internet while my dishwasher is dishwashering. Maybe some gym time this afternoon and then sloth for the evening.

That’s what I thought too. Great minds and all that…

FCM, glad the yard work is going well.

shoe, Sassenach is a Scottish term for an English person, and apparently Weegie is the English term for a Scotish person. I knew the first term already, but discovered something new with the second one.

Cookie, lovely picture.

And back to working on my RDOS credentials…

Nearly- Weegie isn’t the English term for someone from Scotland, it’s specifically someone from Glasgow, and it’s used in Scotland as well.

I had a decidedly unsatisfying day at irk- didn’t really manage to do anything; looked and poked at things that will need doing, but did a negligible amount of all of them.

My PCP’s office called. PA-C Joe wants me to come in to get an injection in my knee on Thursday.

Sir Charles and I sauntered down the wooded path. It took a long time to get out of bed because he jumped on the bed and my supine body and wouldn’t let me up until he’d had a fair bit of snuggles. On the walk, we met a cute and feisty little dog and TWO squirrels just sitting on the grass daring Chuck to chase them. He came close (about 4 feet)!

Oh, this brought a rush of nostalgia. My dad used to say that the rain was on its way out once you could see as much blue sky as a Dutchman’s trousers. I understand the phrase originated with English sailors. All of my dad’s grandparents came over from England (two from Cornwall). It sometimes amazes people that my grandfather was born during the American Civil War. I’m babbling. Sorry.

shoe, dear, I say this with love: eat, dammit. What happens if you eat something when your stomach posts a Do Not Enter sign?

cookie, breathtaking sunrise.

OK, here’s a Halloween riddle for you:
Why did the ghost walk into the bar?

He wanted boooooze.

Yuk, yuk, yuck.

He didn’t want spirits?

I was loading on the 200 today. So the multi-million dollar RFID system: 1. Didn’t detect a box with a sticker from yesterday as a misload. 2. After I walked into and immediately out of the wrong package car, decided that the rug I was carrying was a misload even when it was in the correct truck. 3. Randomly beeped if a box was too near the outside of the truck. 4. Doesn’t tell you which package is a misload(but the system narcs on you to the PT sup). 5. Doesn’t actually update the system to tell which packages are actually on the truck vs. Labeled but left behind. Also, the state Department of Heath and Human Se vices moved to a new address on Oct. 1st. There is a physical address(1915 Health Services Way/1910 Health Services Way for the loading dock) which the system still doesn’t recognize and a GPS location(3905 Reedy Creek Road) which the drivers think is a bad address. There’s also the state mail services center address, but it costs them(and taxpayers like me) money when I change it to that, and some stuff isn’t changeable. When one of the FT sups brought me a letter to the GPS address, I told him about the addresses and said "At this point I’m about to call DHHS and tell them to give up hope and find another shipper. And somehow we’re still the best shipper in the business. < bangs head and weeps >

Also, there is rhythmic thumping from the upstairs apartment. Either they’re getting their freak on to a metronome, or they’re trying summon Shai Hulud.

Oh come on, it’s the bee’s knees, Daddy-O!

Nifty. But you basicly spent what I paid for Carmen on 2 bikes. On the other hand, bikes are the perfect vehicle for the apocalypse(zombie or not).

If they replace all the windows in your complex, a 60lbs. JRT can(and will) bark continuously for 6 hours straight.

Yes.

My Halloween joke:
What do you get when you goose a ghost?

A handful of sheet.

I just finished doing something I haven’t done in years - I wrote snail mail!!! I’ve been trying to log into my account on Princess Cruise Lines, and despite multiple verifications of my login ID and multiple password resets, I still get the same error message. I tried their Chat function, but that’s only for cruise info. So I called and spent half an hour with someone who was obviously eating and who walked me thru the same steps I took, and even suggested I try a different browser. Then she told me the login servers will be down for 72 hours. Um, yeah, big company like that??

Then she put me on hold again and the call disconnected. Just for giggles, I tried FCD’s account and it logged right in. Then I tried the app, but got the same error message. Dammit. So I wrote a snail mail in the hopes that it will get someone’s attention.

FCD and I walked out to see what’s going on with the landscape - they’re de-rooting the hill and they’ll fertilize it or something. Tomorrow, they’ll plant and mulch. I’ll need to drag the hose/sprinkler all the way over there since it’ll need to be watered as it gets established. Anyway, it’s going to be a big-ass bit of landscaping! Can’t wait to see it all!

I think it means she’s English and her sweetie is from Glasgow (Scotland).

Happyish Tuesday.

As usual, nothing much to report. Typical Tuesday. Teaching, rehearsal. In bed too late.

But Friday we’re getting kittens! Picked them out at the cat cafe on Saturday. Names to be determined. It was too quiet at home. So this week is about preparing the house. New cat trees, scratching things, litter boxes, toys, cat beds. My wife wants to make a cat corner in the upstairs landing that will include the memorial posters our nephews made for the old cats.

We’ll also be doing Halloween things Friday. Probably drag our fire pit out to the driveway and chat with neighbors while the few kids that come down our street visit us. While also wandering in and out to acclimate the cats.
