The St. John's Bible (I'm looking at you, Minneapolis types)

Finals were Friday and this is my vacation week so I took off for the Minneapolis Institute of Arts where they are displaying pages from the St. John’s Bible. For those not familiar with it, it’s the first illuminated bible commissioned in something like 500 years and it’s. Fucking. Stunning. And this is coming from a non-religious type.

I’ve been watching stuff on PBS and local news and CBS Sunday Morning for a couple of years now and what one sees on TV doesn’t come close to seeing it in real life. Even the reproductions of it pretty much suck compared to real life.

It’ll be at the MIA through 3 July, then goes to Omaha (Omaha? Why Omaha?), then to the Victoria and Albert in London (the calligrapher is from the UK), then will be bound and stay at St. John’s Abbey in Collegeville, MN.

Tickets for the guided tour (a little more than an hour) are $6 and well worth the cost.
