The Stanley Cup Playoffs Thread

There wasn’t really too much talk about that. But I did like the Canucks response. Tanner Glass challenged McGinn at the beginning of Game 4, but McGinn declined so Ballard took an opportunity to destoy him with an absolute beauty of a hip check.

What about Henrick’s pass through the number 5 hole. Says Burrows “I didn’t even see the puck. It just hit my blade and went in.”

I’m so looking forward to seeing my team still playing awesome hockey like this in June!

Stan Mikita diagnosed with oral cancer

Fortunately they caught it early, so it looks like he’ll be all right. Still, that sucks – get well soon, Stan!

These refs are only watching below the armpits. Three high-sticks missed and a bad miss of a non-icing deflection allowing the tying goal. It it a cross-promotion with the Belmont Stakes, refs wearing blinders?

grumble grumble

We got us a good one tonight.

There’s been a lot of talk in the Canadian press about how some Canadians don’t want to root for the Canucks because… I dunno, there’s some weird thing against the Canucks. I don’t get it. How can you cheer against the Canadian team? What’s objectionable about the Canucks?

Especially against a team like San Jose, where hockey has no right existing. Go, Canucks!

Well I’m an American, but I’m rooting for the Canucks this year.

2OT!!!

AND THE CANUCKS ARE GOING TO THE STANLEY CUP FINALS!!!
Yeah!

Epic win. Luongo stole the game. Kesler is a warrior - playing injured and scores the tie goal to send it to OT with seconds left.

I totally loved how every player and ref was like ‘wtf’ looking for the puck, and only Bieksa knew where it was and where he was sending it. Surely that bounce was a sign from the Hockey Gods.

Year of the Nucks!

I can’t say I’ve ever seen a play where only one player out of 12 knew where the puck was.

The Canucks weren’t really the better team last night but they were the better team in the series. I’m having trouble imagining how Boston or Tampa Bay could beat them, but weirder things have happened.

It may (and I stress “may”; I can’t say for sure) have something to do with the fact that of their top five scorers, three of them are Swedes, one’s an American, and one’s a German.

I was right, huh? :frowning:

I have been a Vancouver fan lo these 30 years (ever since I saw Stan Smyl wear the big “V”) and have lived my whole life down east and in the GTA, and this year is the first time I’ve really noticed these sentiments. For me I think it is stoked by some members of the media - notably the douchebag who hosts the late morning show on the Fan 590. I can’t stand that guy.

I hope the Canucks can pull this off, I don’t want to relive the pain of 1994 over again! I feel like they can win it all, makes me sad that Linden isn’t still around for it.

That’s interesting. I’ve never seen or heard anything against the Canucks, in the press or otherwise. Like you mention, how can you not cheer for a Canadian team to win it? Yeah, we all know that teams are made up of international players; I don’t think that can be the issue.

I wonder if it’s a GTA phenomenon and if jealousy may be a factor?

Yes, yes you were :)…but that still doesn’t mean you overlook ANY team that’s in front of you…as a coach, I had to pound that into 7-15 year olds almost every week at hockey and baseball games. By the time their adults, it’s a canned response every time media asks a question regarding looking beyond the current series.

There were a couple of Shark players who did see it, but were skating in the opposite direction (towards the boards) looking back at Bieksa and the shot he took…the camera angle from the other side of the rink (behind Bieksa) had the best view of this and the puck bouncing off the partition.

Sharks had control most of the game, BUT when Vancouver wants to score, they’ll score. That’s some of the best set plays and passing I’ve seen from any team in years.

I suspect you may be right. The quality of commentary on the Fan 590 is appalling in general, and that’s one of their weird little hate things. I know the guy you’re talking about, not that I can remember his name.

The Fan 590 is absolute shit 90% of the day, in large part because the announcers

A) Don’t know anything about any sport except hockey, and
B) To be honest, they don’t know as much about hockey as they think they do.

It’s even been mentioned on Hockey Night in Canada. Hell, they had a whole Stephen Brunt segment about it.

I’m beginning to not like the Canucks because of the whining by Canucks fans - or really, mostly the Vancouver media - about “why doesn’t the rest of Canada like the Canucks, who are “Canada’s team”?” The total lack of confidence in how good their own team is makes me not particularly want to root for them, though really, I tend to fall towards indifference for the most part. I dislike Luongo, but that’s mostly because of his hair gel addiction. The Sedins are impressive, as are Kessler and Bieksa… but even then, it’s more of an academic appreciation of the team than an emotional one, if that makes sense? I also think those shades of blue and green don’t actually go together, but that’s about as valid a criticism as the hair gel.

I also don’t particularly adhere to the idea of cheering for a team just because they are from Canada, since the majority of NHL players are Canadian anyways, it just seems rather arbitrary.

Quebecois…correct?

I prefer Vancouver because the team is much more deserving than the Sharks.

But then again, I’m SoCal…so my hatred for NoCal makes me biased too.

I don’t much care which bandwagoners join the Canuck train, everyone’s welcome, but if you are cheering against Vancouver prepare yourself to be disappointed.

Quebecoise…yeah. Before you think it has anything to do with not liking Canada or somesuch, though, I’m a federalist and politics don’t have anything to do with it. I just don’t jump onto bandwagons because it’s a Canadian team; I jump onto bandwagons because I like a team. I’m ambivalent about the Canucks and feel the insecurity about whether or not they are “Canada’s Team” is hilarious and makes me want to point and laugh.

At this point, as long as Boston loses, I’m content.

BTW- the hockey in the Memorial Cup is rather awesome. I haven’t chosen a team to cheer for, though “Sea Dogs” is a cool name!
