The State Fair - a Minnesota MMP

Woot! Got here before Swampy! I wanna go to the Texas state fair, but can’t talk my hubby into it. I have been to the Panhandle South Plains Fair in Lubbock before and it is pretty awesome. They had some cows hooked to a milking machine, and we got to see that. I’m a city girl, so farm stuff is still pretty cool to me.

I saw something weird today. There was water falling from the sky! I think it is what the Ancient Ones called rein, or rayn, or sumpin’ like that! The temp is now 72 degrees, 30 degrees cooler than it was yesterday!

I have to go to bed so I can get up in 3 hours to get the girls ready for school.

Night all.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Ugh, it’s going on 1:00 and I still haven’t shut off the computer and gone to bed. I have been staying up far too late all summer, which is easy to do with my chronic insommnia, but 6:00 is gonna be difficult.

However, I have been racking my brains for the last week, remembering a post about garden gnomes and marigolds. Finally I told myself one search and then put the computer to bed. So I did. And who posted about the gnomes and marigolds? Only Rue! :smack:

I am gonna lay down for real now.

I think the Maryland State Fair is held in Timonium, which is north of Baltimore. We never went when I was a kid, so I’m not certain. However, the St. Mary’s county fair is the 3rd weekend of Sept. We went last year - it wasn’t particularly impressive, so I doubt that we’ll go again this year.

But now I want some food-on-a-stick. Somehow, the bagel I had wasn’t enough of a breakfast… Time for work - I’ll check in again this afternoon.

I’ve lived in Illinois my whole life, and I’ve only ever been to the Iowa, and Wisconsin fairs.

Wisconsin wins. Fewer tattooed women, better food and drink.

First things first, thanks for the beerverage last night doggy, it was cold and hit the spot!

And now, off to work. Today is Mock School Day - just like it sounds, we play like it’s aq school day, make sure all the plans work, buses run, etc…

Gator on a stick in the Land Of 10,000 Lakes And A Few Weirdos? Did the gators come from the Minnisoda Bayou? I would have expected lutefisk on a stick instead…

The NC state fair is the first full week of October. I think we’ll go…

The score now is Bob 15, wasps 3. I got had yesterday by new nest that sprang up in a sawhorse in the week since I used it last. I could show people where it got me, but they’d thing I was flipping them off instead.

Big homeowner news: I finished the kitchen yesterday. New wooden trim and wallpaper border were what was needed. Also used 2 cans of foam sealant on the workshop foundation to try to keep the rats out. I missed church because I woke up at 10AM, and I didn’t push myself as hard yesterday as I did Saturday.

Maddy ran off and made the quarter mile trip throught the cotton to the Bed and Brekkie neighbors, who were having a party. Obviously, the little attention whore thought she’d get better belly rubs over there, because we were too busy cutting woodwork. Stoooopid dog was lucky she didn’t get killed on the highway, or by me when I got her home.

Oh, and we have Dixie snow. The cotton bolls are popping, and the tufts are now showing.

Sounds like a fun day ahead MBG.
Wow, all these new MMPers! Welcome! (Guess we should start the MMP on Sunday more often…?)

I have a meeting all morning. At least I don’t have to present much. Maybe 10 minutes at the end of the morning.

You think? Of course it’s in Timonium, at that place called the State Fairgrounds, silly.
You grew up here and never went to the fair as a kid? Jeez, you missed out. It’s always fun.

I’ll be there tonight, as a matter of fact, with the Fire Safety House. We’re giving tours for the kids and whoever else wants to see it.
I’ll be in uniform! Any Baltimore-area Dopers come find me. We’re right by the exibition hall near the Main Gate.
And since I’m with the fire department, I get in free and get a meal voucher, so I can go get yummy fair food for free!

Hi everyone. It’s still too hot for State Fairs here, and frankly I’m not much of a fair fan. Anyway, we have other concerns here for the time being.

Aside:
Nava, I saw a post by you in another thread on software. Did you ever work in Madrid? (I used to visit Madrid and even Barcelona once in the same field)

I think I went to one Pennsylvania State Fair when I was a kid. Other than that, nada (not to be confused with Nava.)

I had a juniper bush commit suicide this weekend. I think it was because it was lonely after all the other junipers were removed earlier this year (they were turning nto juniper trees, which did not fit into our landscaping plans for the Factfortress), but the GF believes, get this, *it had just choked itself by overgrowing *. Po-tay-to, po-tat-o I say.

Speaking of the GF, I’m trying to convince her to take her daughters up to the Eastern Shore this weekend for her sister’s 50th B-day. I wasn’t invited, but that’s fine with me. It’ll be a girls night out for them, and I’d either have to ramble around a town I don’t know all by myself, or hang out with the Man-Child and his D&D buddies. What will I do instead? Well, sleep, for one thing. And maybe head down to this club in NC I’ve heard about. They serve drinks, and have half-nekkid women dance around.

There was no way in hell I was going to be first! actually, I did see the OP last night but refused to post in it. Monday MMP on Sunday night? Not ready to do that yet. Figured I’d wait until the morning.

I am going to be a sporadic poster at best this week. I have Wed, Thur, and Fri off, to finish moving as we have to be out of the old apartment by Thursday midnight.

We have been doing really good, though. Some of the stuff is even unpacked in the new place. I just want to have it done now. I am tired of living out of two apartments and forever thinking “Oh, damn, [that]'s in the other apartment.” And last night we were almost missing something vital  but managed to find a couple in this apartment. If you haven’t guessed what it is, you’re probably too young to be reading the MMP.

Taxi, cute OP! Baby duckies and piglets sound so cute. Please post pics!

I haven’t been to the Faire around here in a few years. The Altamont Faire is really phenomenal and they have pot-bellied pig racing! Which is so cute.

Good morning to everyone!

I haven’t been to a state fair since I was a little ‘un, but I used to go to the county fair pretty regularly back in my college days. My favorite part of the fair is all the stuff that’s bad for you. Dead animal on a stick, funnel cake, more dead animal on a stick, beer. MMMMMMM.
I had a good vacation with the boy fishin’ in Tofino, BC . We caught lots and lots of Salmon, and I brought about 60 pounds of it home to the wife, so I can screw up big and not get in trouble (for a while, anyway). I also got to see my dad’s new boat, which is a real beauty. We’re planning another salmon expedition for nex year on his boat. I can hardly wait!

In other news, we bought a camper right before I went on vacation, and took it on its maiden voyage Saturday with the kids. We went to Wolf Gap which has the advantage of being free. There are several trails for hiking, and a great view from the campground. We haven’t named the camper yet, but we’re leaning towards “Hibby Jibby”.

What’s hotdish?

welby, taxi says

I’ve been going to the Kentucky State Fair all my life, though I haven’t been in the last few. All the kitsch and glory as are found everywhere, I’m sure. I also try to pat every animal that’s available. I’ll never forget, once when I was a kid, at a petting zoo a goat ate half of my scarf. While it was still around my neck! We had to pull it back out! (hee hee: “once when I was a kid.”)

Sadness abounds, re: the plane crash here. Newlyweds, who had just gotten married and were on their way to their honeymoon, were among the victims. Of course every death is tragic.

Ooh, not just a butter cow, but a butter calf and a butter cat, too! How fun!

zzzzzzzzZZZZOOOOOMMMMmmmmmmmm

I’ve never been to a State Fair. Only been to a County Fair once.
more later

I’m pretty sure everyone will, this week. He’s down in Miami for something, with the added bonus of watching Ernesto roll in.

Ellen, when Flight 207 went down back in the 80’s, we found we knew someone on it. The family we’d sold our house to - the man had lost his parents, his wife, and his two little girls. No other kids. His entire life was devastated and destroyed. The first thing my mom said was “Well, he can get married again.” Although, considering what I know now about Indian men and the pressure to provide heirs, his family probably did badger him into a new wedding. All the same, it was heartbreaking.

Great OP, taxie! A real walk down Memory Lane. I only ever did the NY state fair oncet. As I remember it, it was too industrial and not what I was used to at our local county fair. We always did the standardbred races and all the animal barns. The midway was just a brief sidetrack. Back then they hadn’t discovered sticks yet so all the food came in napkins.

Saturday Mr. Anachi and I went to the stone yard to pick out our countertop stone for the Master Bath. The stone yard was having a remnants sale so we ended up picking a great piece of Green Butterfly granite. The plumber came and hooked up the two shower heads and also replaced the hardware in the second bath. We’re almost done! Whoot!

Found this weird critter chewing on my orange tree yesterday. Not only did it mimic a snakes head but when prodded stuck out what looked like a red forked tongue but is really some kind of appendage called an osmeterium. Too bad it needed to be dispatched but like I said, it was eating my future citrus crop.

So now everybody here is keeping their eyes on Ernesto. Hopefully, he will keep swinging east and stay the heck out of Orlando. I have no desire to spend a long holiday weekend sitting in a hot house without power. :stuck_out_tongue:

Tupug

Morning! State Fairs are fun. I saw a motorcycle carved out of butter at the Iowa State Fair. Very exciting. I think we have fewer examples of butter artistry up in Canada. It’s the Canadian National Exhibition (or CNE) this week, which is roughly equivalent. I haven’t been in years, and I’m sort of thinking about going, except it’s $12 to get in and wander around eating doughnuts.
I fell asleep at about four and woke up at 8:30. I don’t feel as bad as I did on Saturday, but I would still like to resume normal sleeping habits, please.

Well, technically, Pennsylvania doesn’t have a State Fair. We have the State Farm Show, which is a little light on Midway and such, being held inside the Farm Show Complex and all.

TGIM! Two glorious day off in a row. I think today I watch some movie,so I can start cycling through my Netflix queue. My burns from Friday are starting to scab over, although the cat tries to lick the intact ones. Apparently she likes medium rare long pig.

picu, MSP is Mundane Sunday Post.

Nava, we used to do something like the circuit when I was at N.C. State. We called it Hillsborough Street golf.

sneezy, water from the sky? That’s crazy talk. Next you’ll be telling us Cecil isn’t a real person.

You’re welcome, MBG. Think of it as a thank you for carting off the delinquents from my store.

bobbio, when Maggie ran away, she always ended up being caught by the police. I wonder what her rap sheet looks like.
