I think not even having the slightest curiosity as to what one’s privates (even breasts!) look like (especially during puberty) is a serious mental issue in itself. Commitment? I’m not sure what authority could commit you for that. Does she need therapy? Definitely.

No. Why - or rather - how would you? Unless you’re far more flexible that I was, you can’t really get an eyeful without the assistance of some mirrors and lighting. I followed the directions on the package and felt my way around with my hands.
I think it’s odder that one never caught a glimpse in a mirror or while undressing than the wiping/menstrual thing. I’ve never seen my entire vulva*, but I’ve seen the rest of me. (And, of course, I’ve seen my mons and the front edge of the labia majora in a full length mirror.)

While the OP was weird, I think much of the weirdness also comes from the way Dopers reacted. Not the usual well-researched discourse we’ve gotten used to on the SDMB, in my opinion.
Well, vaginal maintenance isn’t very hardcore. The best way to keep everything healthy is to basically do nothing. I mean, I wash it off (I use soap for the other parts but not in the vagina) with warm water, but that’s about it, unless I think I have some kind of infection. I did look at my vagina with a mirror for the first time when I was 19 because I was curious, had started having intercourse, etc…it definitely looked weirder than I had expected. No unicorns at all!

If you are curious, I dreamt that my brother had been in an accident and had his hands replaced with said hooks. My mother also revealed that she had a hook in place of a leg (yes, a hook leg, not even Captain Hook is that hardcore), and I had strange plasticky prosthetic hands and was pleased to discover that I could still play the piano.
In the woman sperm one, too, rather than say, “Meh, I know it’s silly, but it’s just a cute little nickname, as KellyM is MtF”, she freaks out and lectures us, even though some here weren’t familiar with that fact. In the second, the obvious thing was-lee passed out and came to, was still basically out of it, and started fighting the guards who were lifting her up. They tried to restrain her (as you would any patient who’s struggling), and she mistook that for being attacked.
