The Summer's Over, but the River Was Nice

Well, first a mama pig and a daddy pig decide to make a baby pig… oh, not from that far back you say? Ok, well then, this explains things pretty well. FYI, I use an electric water smoker most of the time. I do have a great big charcoal and wood smoker but I only crank that bad boy up about once a year for some serious <snerk> butt <snerk>, rib and chicken smoking. It holds a ton o’ meat!

FCM here’s some good thoughts and stuff for FCD. I’ve known a few folks who have avoided spinal surgery by using injections.

Bobbio I’m glad to see the Luterans are not above burning heretics and heathens these days. I’m wondering if a couple <snerk> butts <snerk> wrapped in foil and tossed in would come out ok. I say, if ya got a good fire going make use of it. Maybe toast a few marshmallows or roast some weinies too. Roasted weinies and 'smores would make for a pretty good burning at the stake campfire supper, don’t ya think?

A SHOT IN THE NECK???

Oh man!

Prayers headed out, FCM.

Well, it would have been difficult if it had worked at all, Ashes. Next time I’ll try something easier, like taming moose. We’ve got lots of moose in downtown Toronto. And cougars. And… um… bears.

I did see twelve racoons last night. That’s real wildlife for you.

I think they’re going into the spine. He’s got 3 herniated disks that are pressing against his spinal cord and causing his left arm and leg to occasionally go numb or tingly. Not good. So they’re going to try a series of shots, hoping it’ll help. Neither Dr he saw wants to do surgery. Nor do I want him to have it. Hubby, on the other hand, just wants it to be over, so he’s all for surgery. I don’t want to think about it…

Hah! The maple walnut cinnamon buns are out of the oven. Made with real maple syrup, too. Who wants one?

Can we have hot chocolate too?

Good thoughts and prayers headed out to FairyChatDad and his spine. Good thing his doctors want to avoid surgery. That’s the mark of a good (especially) back surgeon. They avoid it and try all available alternatives first.

I haven’t been canoeing in AGES. Not since I moved to Columbus, I think, which was 22 years ago last weekend. I think I got here August 31 or so; I know it was just before Labor Day because my first Columbus experience was the Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival, which was OK (I bought some nice notecards), but not great at the time. I’ve gone most years since then (when I was in town, at least) and it’s really gotten to be excellent. Pretty much junk-free (there are always a few painters that I don’t think are especially good, but otherwise they have some very nice stuff). Didn’t buy anything this year, but I’m starting to get ideas for when I start to redo the house.

Anyhoo…when I lived in Michigan, we went canoeing a few times. Also, my uncles were in some kind of rowing club when I was little (10, 11, something in that range) and my brother and I got to go out with them and their friends and steer. That was fun except the river we were on was tres polluted, so I was always afraid of tipping over. Maybe I’ll get to canoe again sometime…I’ve always kind of liked it, although not the tippiness so much.

I would now like to publicly blame Draelin for my lack of productivity this weekend.

She initiated a game of Doperball on Friday which turned into a self-refereed 2 out of 3. It has been rather chaotic and team 2 remained nameless until this last round.

Apparently, it was just the distraction I needed, because I kept wandering back into it between stuff. Of course, it makes the answer to the question “What did you do this weekend?” kind of problematic as I’m not about to explain Doperball to pretty much anyone who isn’t a Doper. So my official answer is “not much, except Monday, when I went to the arts festival and did a bunch of yardwork at church and at home and then started to do laundry.”

I had Oprah’s favorite chicken salad at Wild Oats for dinner. It was nummy. Also some tortilla soup, which was OK. Not bad, but not great either. Off to look for the chicken salad recipe. Oh, and maple walnut cinnamon buns would be a great dessert. I’ll take one, Lissla

I nearly saw my parents’ marriage end that way. I mean, it was a raft, not a canoe, and it’s been two decades since, and they’re still together … but that was an object lesson for me.
Namely “Go with the single person kayaks. Two person boats are only romantic in movies.”

I hope FairyChatDad and VunderWife are all doing well! VunderWife will need new VunderWear. :stuck_out_tongue:

Lissla, can I have a cinnamon bun? I’ll trade you for some blueberry coffeecake! It’s nummy, but it needs more blueberries, I think.

Those Lutherans sure know how to do a barbecue!

Oooops, forgot VunderWife. Glad the surgery went well. Hope her recovery goes just as smoothly as yours Bobbio.

You’re silly, MagicEyes. Made me giggle. Lots. VunderWear <snerk>. Barbeque <snerk snerk>.

I found $16.01 when I moved laundry from the washer to the dryer. Can’t remember paying $3.99 for anything recently - I hardly ever pay in cash. It’s all very clean now, though.

gardentraveler, don’t you know laundering money is illegal? But it’s okay, I won’t turn you in. Nobody else laughs at my stoopid jokes.

oh, crud. I ate two. It was a bad idea. They’re about four inches per side. I’m really, really full.

I gave four to Attacks Husband for his family. Mr. Lissar probably won’t eat any, because he doesn’t eat baked goods  and I’m not eating a huge panful by myself. And shoving them in the disk drive didn’t work, either. :frowning:

Because the drive holds 3.5 inch squares!

That means you need to mush em down a lot or cut em in half and send it twice. Personally the neatest feature on my puter is that little cup holder. My new home puter has two of em!

Ow. Ow, ow, ow, ow, OWIE.

Good luck to FairyChatDad. Any messing around with the spine makes me oogy.

I publicly apologize to gardentraveler for the Doperball thing.

I was bored, and then I left, and mayhem followed.

Oh, and best wishes to VunderVife and FairyChatDad, because I’m incapable of saying two things in one post. sigh

Coffee. Coffee now.

Just talked to VunderWife. She had a decent night, and the nurses are doing unspeakably cruel things to her like making her get up and walk around. It wasn’t a problem for me, but VW has orthpedic problems that make walking difficult. That’s why she had the bypass; the weight loss ought to relieve the pressure, and lessen the arthritis and other stuff she has to deal with.

It was so nice having the bed to myself, however…

I would like this. Growing up Dad’s idea of camping was to not do it. Although we did camp a lot in Boy Scouts. Once a month, every month, all year. Just for a weekend at a time though. But still, fun.

One time a group of our boys (but not me, oddly enough) almost got arrested by the Army for trying to break into their tanks. The Army doesn’t seem to like people messing with their tanks. Go figure.

Good to hear VunderWife came through the surgery ok. Ya know, since she is married to you and all, I would imagine she has lots to bitch about.
But now she has less to bitch about. So there’s that.

Quick healing and stuff to VunderVife.

And also FCDad.

And also Brody dog. He goes in to get his parts ectomied today.

Best wishes for fcd. Here’s hopin he can avoid the surgery. I come from a spinally-handicapped family and know what a “pain in the neck” it is. (Sorry.) Anyhoo, I do know they’ve made great strides in the surgery for herniated discs so if it comes down to that, it may be the best thing.

Iffen I hadda be burnt, I’d want some kinda deadly toxic gas to come outta the wood cause I don’t fancy toasted tootsies.

lissla, maybe you should consider a baked goods catering business. That way you could indulge your pastry passion and get rich all at the same time.

Last night for dinner I made a boneless chicken stir fry with some brown rice and zuchinni and summer squash and peppers and onion. It was good and all healthy like.

Then at about 1 am the telephone woke me up. It was Gran calling to say she was in a lot of pain and wanted me to take her to the ER. She has arthritis in her hip and spine. I got up and took her in. It was after 3:30 before I got back to bed. I’m tired.
