The taste of batteries

Is the “taste” of a 9v battery a chemical the manufacturers coat the terminals with to prevent kids from licking the battery or is it simply the current simulating the taste buds?
I heard the chemical spray theory from a message board, and I was checking if anyone had heard of it before.

Hmm, I wonder if car batteries create the same sensation…

It’s the electricity, works with any low voltage source.
Same taste if you chew on a metal gum wrapper if you have silver fillings.

It is the electricity. But it’s not quite the same taste as chewing on the foil gum wrapper. I find 9v kinda nice, but can’t stand having foil in my mouth.

If you put the contacts of the 9v on the inside of your upper lip, do you see any visual artifacts? I haven’t done it in a while, but I seem to remember seeing a flash when I tried it.

Gee, I can’t wait till my kids get hold of this idea ! Won’t be a working smoke detector for blocks.

If you think that’s fun, try hooking up jumper cables to your ears and to a car battery! Wheee!
