My (now) wife was able to come to America because I petitioned for her with a fiance visa. We had a civil marriage last week (you have to get married within 90 days of arrival on a fiance visa) and until my wife is able to get her papers in order, she cannot legally work and I am the only breadwinner.
Needless to say, things are pretty tight right now moneywise, and the sooner my wife can work, the better we will be. She can not even apply for a social security card yet to begin applying for the paperwork to be allowed to work legally. We were expecting 1-2 months after we got married that she would be able to work, but it looks like the backlog was 3 months behind even before the Tea Party shutdown.
So, every additional month my wife cannot work will be a huge burden on us. Beyond just the money, my wife is going stir crazy because she can’t work and doesn’t have any family here except me, and only one friend of hers lives here locally.
Since I’m not an idiot I won’t play these false equivalency games of “both sides need to come to an agreement”-no, the government is shut down right now because republicans are skirting the democratic process and using a nuke button to get what they want which they couldn’t get through votes, and it’s utterly disgusting…and yet still roughly 50% of the idiots in this country will continue to vote for people who PROUDLY flaunt how much they hate government and don’t believe government can do anything well, and not notice any of their circular logic while doing so. :smack:
I have a similar situation, the delays will mean that the Ms. Buster will not get a visa soon. Besides the lack of revenue there is the lack of cuddling.
And then they think they will get the Hispanic vote… with this and the delays to Immigration reform the Tea Partiers and the Republicans are only gaining **involved **political enemies for life, and it is not just my family, but many friends also.
Hi guys, all fee-based services provided by USCIS are still up and running, because they aren’t dependent on the budget. I don’t know about Social Security, though…so aren’t you glad you shelled out those bucks for your K-1/I-130 petitions? And I-765 applications?
Let me see what I can find out about Social Security, but there shouldn’t be any holdup for the I-485 or I-765.
My son in law is furloughed and not getting paid, so it’s affecting my family too, though not quite in the same way. I can help them out with some food, but that’s about it, so I hope this doesn’t last too much longer.
I think the tea party shut down is an appropriate way to describe it.
I’ve always wondered how that works. If you want some Mexicans to help you put together your new Ikea furniture or whatever, how does everyone decide who gets the job?
Anyway though it’s not hard to make a few hundred or so each month under the table. Childcare, petcare, occasionally retail or office work…
You get to pick. Its a little more organized around here. The guys who paint will be wearing painting overall and will be holding a painting brush. The guys who do carpentry will be holding a saw or drill. There will be guys with a rake or shears to do yardwork.
I once saw Carlos Mencia on CC do a bit about how he visited Mexico and encountered a Home Depot – only, it was just an empty building. No merchandise inside, no people inside, no cars in the parking lot. He wondered why. And then it struck him: "It’s a training center!"
It sucks that the shutdown is fucking over your family. The Republicans feel that they have to do this to end Obamacare. They are idiots. I know that doesn’t help you in your time of need, but hang in there. This will pass.
Congratulations on the marriage! Now would be a good time for her to get to know your area, learn the bus routes, and maybe volunteer at a local animal shelter or something similar.
