The terrifying hatchet man in the bunny suit - Did this originate in Maryland or not?

In my mid teens in the early to mid 70’s Montgomery County MD, there were often hair raising stories bandied about that a man in a rabbit suit wielding an ax was menacing local teenagers necking in cars.

Now I see this and wonder if was a more widely spread meme.

Did you have bunny man with an ax in your neck of the woods?

Mid teens in the late 70’s in Anne Arundel County, MD. Never heard of this.

No, we played it safe and bought our liquor at the liquor store.

Nope, just the standard guy with a hook for a hand.

Yeah we had the guy with the hook and another guy with the “striped sweater”. Interestingly, this pre-dates Nightmare on Elm Street by at least five years, if not more. But I swear the guy was described as wearing a green and red striped sweater (a drove a white four door sedan).

I found a similar warning in my mailbox late 1980s, in a totally different town. Sme sweater and car. The guy gets around.

No Easter Bunny murderer though.

Grew up in Northern Virginia. We had a bunny man. Escaped from the insane asylum. Lived in the woods. Killed kids who stayed out past curfew.

Thanks for the wiki article… I grew up in Fairfax. Close to Clifton.

Frank from Donnie Darko?
