The Terrorists Are Winning!

People afraid to fly.

Stock market crashing.

Massive layoffs in key industries.

Potential restrictions on Civil Liberties.

Popular culture sef-censoring.

Racial hatred rearing its ugly head in many Americans.

I am grateful that we have indeed much of the best of Americans, with the donations of money and blood and the coming together and the relief efforts. But there is also a not-so-subtle change that has made us more afraid. It makes me a little mad when I hear folks on the radio saying they won’t fly, they won’t go to a concert or a sporting event. But I understand, you can’t tell people not to be scared. Fucking terrorists bastard murderers!

It’s a transition. People got one hell of a shock; it’ll level back out eventually, but it’ll take time to come to terms with the ‘new reality.’

The real danger (IMHO) isn’t fear, but an eventual slide back into complacency. We tend to ‘let things go’ pretty quickly.

They are “Terrorists”. By definition, they bring terror… it is what they do. They aren’t winning, we are reacting as best we can, and like any other major hit to this country, recovery may be slow, but it is already happening.

But like apotheosis said, our main concern should be that we do not grieve for a while, and let things get back to normal. Things are no longer “normal”. We need to always have this somewhere in our minds. We need to be wary of the possibility of this happening again. The worst thing that could happen is forgetting, and getting blindsided once again.

It’s only been a week and a half. A little soon to say that were going to hell in a handbasket.
