The things that each side fears losing (on a given political issue)

Does this mean you are in favor of gun control now?

The only moral abortion is my abortion. True tales about the anti-abortion hypocrites.

What do you have in mind? I have trouble thinking of something analogous to childbirth that applies to me as a male. But I’m not a good representative of conservatism when it comes to abortion, and without religious absolutes I can’t even make out a coherent “conservative” position.

Imagine that you’re a women then? Jesus, is imagination so hard for some people? Try to imagine how it would feel if there were a large movement pushing to make the government able to tell you what to do with your own body. If it’s the abortion part that you’re getting stuck on, then take that out. Imagine there was a group trying to claim that outdoor urination was bad for the environment and therefore men should be forbidden from taking a piss outside and instead must only use government approved receptacles. That wouldn’t bother you? Seriously just take a few minutes and try to imagine any scenario that you would be ok with the government mandating what you, personally, can and cannot do with your body. Then ask yourself why you are ok forcing that onto others.

The Selective Service System already does that, and doesn’t bother me all that much.

You are comparing selective service to government control of female reproductive organs? What if there was a law that all male residents of Utah must undergo forced vasectomies until such time that they can prove that they would be able to support a child that they father? Sounds like this shouldn’t bother you either then?

If a uterus was a gun, all of a sudden you’d be all about protecting it from government interference.

I think you’re confused. You said “try to imagine any scenario that you would be ok with the government mandating what you, personally, can and cannot do with your body”. I imagined one (which happens to also be a real one). There are certainly some other scenarios I could imagine in which the government mandated what people can and cannot do with their own bodies that I would NOT be ok with.

I’m not confused. You are being condescending.

I’m not interested in being condescended to.

Personally I’m fine with abortions up until the fetus is viable (around 26-27 weeks or when a doctor says so). At that point I endow the fetus with personhood and it’s only OK to abort if the doctor certifies that bringing the baby to term will cause irreparable harm. I’m on the fence with regard to mental harms. My grandfather, a pro-life activist, is probably rolling over in his grave. Marital or rape status doesn’t enter the picture, although I might compromise with those who place weight on marital consent if abortion is requested, and medical necessity is absent, after 24 weeks or whenever the doctor says there is a significant chance of viability.

If I were a woman, I would feel the same way. I would have plenty of time to decide whether to keep the baby or not. It is difficult not to recognize pregnancy before 20 weeks or so, unless I were underage in which case medical necessity would probably support a late abortion. The fetus, once viable, becomes a person and its rights are respected just like mine. I am making assumptions but I don’t think they are unreasonable.

My opinion, for what it’s worth.

A friend of mine found out her baby didn’t have a brain in the second trimester. The doctor withheld this information for 30 days. By the time they realized they needed an abortion asap the religious hospitals would not perform it and she had to travel and there were complications that left her in the hospital for several days wondering if she would make it.

These are not our decisions to make. These decisions are for the families to make. She might have died because her doctor waited 30 days to tell her this awful news. The only reason I can think for this delay was to get her past the point that abortion becomes difficult to get performed. This is reprehensible and we should stop treating women like property of the state.

This is my opinion, for what its’s worth.

In the USA, 10% of babies born at 22 weeks survive, 50% of those born at 23 weeks, and 70% of those born at 24 weeks. source

That’s horrible. But I would be for an abortion at that point because a brainless baby is not viable.

Just as a reminder for everyone, how many people were drafted last year?

And the human head weighs 8 lbs

cite - the little kid from Jerry McGuire

I would like it alot less if the government allowed someone to kill me.

Do you want to be killed? Why then is it so hard to imagine a baby not wanting to be killed?

There is no meaningful distinction between a baby that was born prematurely at 32 weeks and a baby in the mother’s womb at 40 weeks. That is just hiding behind semantics.

The number of babies I have personally adopted has no bearing on whether it is okay to kill them.
Ooola would probably like me if she got to know me.

Why is it so hard to understand that the issue isn’t that simple? How many unwanted babies have you adopted?

Would you like to have been the one to tell my friend’s husband that his wife just almost died because you made the choice for her that she shouldn’t be able to abort her baby without a brain? That’s what her doctor did essentially. I find that abhorrent.

What in the world makes you think that you are qualified to make these intimate choices for everyone?!

It means you don’t really give a shit about these babies that you keep virtue signaling about, to use a term that you on the right should understand.

I have always been in favor of restricting people from murdering others with guns.

I have also always been in favor of gun control (see licensing and registration). I am against retarded forms of gun control (see assault weapons ban).

Are you saying that you no longer support gun control?

Imagine you are in a lifeboat and a baby flops into lifeboat. You didn’t ask for it but there it is. The baby keeps you up at night; takes up a bunch of room on a small lifeboat; and you have to feed it. And while you have plenty of supplies, it will be 9 months before you get to a port.

Should it be illegal to just dump the baby in the water?

What if its a very sick baby that might not make it to port and might even get you sick?

What if the baby is handicapped or has down’s syndrome?

What if it’s high tech incubator with a fertilized egg that will turn into a baby by the time you reach port?

Your answer might depend on what flopped into the lifeboat with you. Some people think its a baby, other’s think its a fertilized egg that might become a baby in 9 months.
