The Third Annual Steelers March to the Super Bowl Thread

Shall I assume you’re talking about the thread in general? I didn’t mention the Pats at all in my post you quoted.

Lack of clarity on my part. I meant y’all, rather than you personally. Five-yard penalty, repeat of down.

I’m sitting here switching between the Steelers game and the Eagles game, and in both cases, damn. It’s already 28-0 Eagles and 20-0 Steelers. True, neither opponent is very good, but still.

Anyway, the game I’m looking forward to is the Patriots-Steelers game next week. That should be a good one.

Woo hoo! Go Steelers! I gotta say that Ben is showing me more than I was expecting. I know, they haven’t played anyone that challanging, but I was afraid that Ben would not perform as well as last year.

And New England has lost! Woo hoo again! Hopefully they will perform in the same way next week!

Again, a sub-par opponent, but again, the Steelers put them away early. Steeler teams, even great ones, of the past few years, would have made this a 10-0 or 13-7 affair.

Roethlisberger - 14 of 21 for 254 yards and 2 TDs
Parker 111 yards on 25 carries, 1 TD
Hines Ward - 6 catches for 84 yards and 2 TDs

And we should have Duce Staley back next week.

Here we go Stay-lurs, here we go!

Yeah, but they don’t have the best record.

The Ratbirds suck, the Patsies got beat, the Steelers dominated… all in all, I must say that it was a good Sunday.

I’ll just point out for the sake of completeness that the Patriots, with their distinguished 1-1 record, are leading the AFC East. Of course, so is every other team in the AFC East.

Denver won, Oakland lost, all my FF players* did well.

Life is good.

*Willie Parker, Superman

Actually, the Jets are winning the East, just as the Bengals are currently winning the AFC North.

The first tiebreaker is divisional record, don’tcha know.

2 games into the season and we Cincinnatians are beginning to peek out from under our paper bags.

Gooooo, Bengals!

Okay, first a little mini-rant on the Giants not getting respect from the media specifically. The general public gives the Giants their fair due, as evidenced by Big Blue being favored both weeks so far. But the media? Everyone picked the Saints. Fine, yeah, they had to for PR reasons. But in all things it seems that the G-Men get no love. Consider Kurt Warner. We get him last year and he’s washed up and worthless and the Giants will suck. Arizona gets Warner this year and all of a sudden the Cards are everyone’s sleeper pick to win their division and make the playoffs. It’s really…motivating to the Giants players, apparently, so keep it up, media!

The Saints never had a chance tonight; from whistle to whistle they were nothing but a blooper reel. But instead of ruminating on the game, did anybody watch the postgame interviews on ESPNews? They were priceless. Going just from memory:

After all the NFL and Giants did to try to make you feel at home, did you get a sense this was a home game?
Jim Haslett: We were on a visitors field, in a visitors locker room, and they called the coin toss. It’s…uh…I don’t know. It didn’t much feel like a home game.

Preach it, Jim. That coin toss bullshit was a slap in the face, if you ask me, and I’m a friggin’ Giants fan.

Same question to Brooks.
Aaron Brooks: Look, it was a Giants home game, period. Don’t patronize us by telling us it’s a home game.

That was ballsy, and I agree 100% with the sentiment.

Do you think all the turmoil caused by Katrina contributed to the mistakes you guys made tonight?
Deuce McAllister: I don’t blame Katrina for our loss. I blame the New York Giants.

NICE! That’s a standup guy right there, forever earning my respect with a single sentence. “I blame the New York Giants.” That’s pure gold.

Joe, you had a good game…
Joe Horn: No I didn’t. We lost, so I sucked. Look, they didn’t blow the doors off us. We handed the game to them on a platter, and they ate it up. And that’s what they’re supposed to do; that’s why they get paid.

heh, as much as I hate you for that cellphone thing, damn, you earned much respect for your standup interview. He just kept going with this stuff; I was riveted.

They didn’t impress me with their play tonight, but they won me over with their interviews. I’d like to see them get a playoff win this season, doubling their franchise total. That would be good. As long as it isn’t against the Giants, of course.

Oh, and for all the advantage an extra home game is, I don’t think it was the difference in the game, nor did any of the players. It’s not like they’ve been on the road for 12 games in a row already.

But now we get a short week before traveling across country. That is a disadvantage. Is it as much of a disadvantage as an extra home game helps? I don’t know, but we could start by asking the Falcons how their short week cross country trip treated them.

The odds of this tidbit being pointed out by anyone on ESPN? 1%.

Wow, you forget about Brooks’ arm strength (or at least I do, rarely getting to watch the Saints play). He was also very accurate. Why have they not had more success?

The Giants have a fairly good pass rush, too. Strahan still has something left in the tank, huh? All in all, I have to say, it really seemed like the Saints were snake-bitten and lost the game moreso than the Giants won it.

It also seemed like former Steeler night - Jim Haslett, Kendrick Clancy, Wayne Gandy, Carlos Emmons, Brent Alexander, and of course, Plaxico Burress. A good night for him - 5 catches for 64 yards, no TDS, 2 penalties for 20 yards and a couple of drops and lots of posing and jawing.

Because they suck. They are the mayors of Choketown. They spend all their nights drinking on the bayou instead of studying their playbooks and getting sleep.

However you want to spin it, the reason they don’t have success is because they have a remarkable knack, similar to Miami, of crumbling down the stretch. Teams in hot-weather markets that have a famous party scene historicly fall to pieces come December. They are in the race as often as you’d expect up until around Thanksgiving. After that, they completely collapse.

Yeah, yeah, the Giants completely suck, they didn’t earn any either of their wins, they’re lucky, they’ll fall apart. Whatever you want to believe is fine with me.

But your hardon for Plaxico is pathetic and sad. If you’re trying to make the point that Plaxico was a bad addition to the team, then you may want to put down the crackpipe. The fact that he has been an impact player and quality addition to the Giants is self-evident to any and all reasonable football fans.

I think I complemented their pass rush and remarked on how good Strahan is. I think I then said that last night the Saints seemed to be snake-bitten, and anyone who watched that game would be hard pressed to argue otherwise. I think Theisman and McGuire mentioned repeatedly how the Saints had shot themselves in the foot. Frankly, I was more impressed with the Giants after the game than before.

No, I am arguing the point that he is not a remarkably underrated superstar talent whom the Steelers were foolish to be rid of. I am following up on slams against Roethlisberger and a statement that Manning-Burress would have more touchdowns this year than Roethlisberger and all his receivers. So far, Manning-Burress have 1, Roethlisberger has 4.

I have no doubt that he fits well in the Giants system, and maybe they’ll be able to put up with his attitude and ego that far outstrip his ability and contributions.

Not to pick nits, but the statement was “# of Manning-to-Burress TDs > # of Roethlisberger-to-all-Steelers-wide-receivers TDs”. Heath Miller is a TE, not a WR. It’s currently Manning-Burress - 1, Roethlisberger - 3.

The ultimate proof of Burress’ exaggerated playmaking ability will come in February when the Steelers take the Super Bowl without him.

Plaxico Burress never seemed to get the hang of the fact that he’s no longer automatically a star, even if he was a first round draft pick. He’s not a bad receiver, but he’s nowhere near as good as he thinks he is. There were times when it looked like he was starting to grasp that, but then he’d revert to form.

Have fun with him, guys. I’ll take our current lot!
CJ

When I saw Plaxico’s pic in the player introductions, all I could think was “Buckwheat.”

The Steelers had a nice warm-up, now it’s time to put the money where the mouth is. This won’t be an easy game, but it will be a good one.

You’re the only one who has used words like “superstar.” The disagreement was over the statement that Cedrick Wilson was going to have more of an impact on the offense than Burress ever did.
