The Tick

Ever play the original Diablo? - around my house we call Wort “Little Wooden Boy.”

The comic book was a little too dark for my taste. But I loved the cartoon.

We taped almost every Tick episode, now my three year old runs around the house carrying the 18 inch tall Tick action figure yelling SPOON!

Comedy Central stopped airing The Tick over a year ago. Why they would drop The Tick and still show that piece of shit The Critic is beyond me.

He was able to get CHA carved in the moon. The Tick was later sent to the moon to remove the letters. He was able to blow up the C before he himself was blown up, into space. Where he met Omnipotus, a plaent-eating cosmic guy with bizarrely small feet. He planned to eat the Earth until The Tick was able to talk him out of it by explaining about all the great things the Earth has, like bowling trophies and paint-by-numbers sets. Omnipotus agreed to spare the Earth but on his way back to space took a bite out of the moon. So from then on the moon always read HA with a big bite out of it.

A great book for Tick fans is “Mighty Blue Justice!” by Greg Hyland. It is chock-full of information on the series, including “case book” synopses of most of the episodes. And it’s hilarious.

My younger brother and I still fall into hysterics when we recite this little quote:

And then Arthur used the line to impress Carmelita on their first date. Pretty slick, that Arthur.

Ah what can I say. i just LOVE THE HUMOUR not for its funniness but for its sheer absurdness and suddeness. what can I say…
SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!

did someone say live action show???

I think several people said live action show. This Thursday on FOX at 8:30 EST.

Handy’s reading list is a MUST!

'Read a book…you’re making us look like jerks!

Actually, one of the themes of the comic was that there were very few supervillains for the superheroes to fight. At one point the rented villain “Red Menace” shows up to smash the Thomas Dewey memorial. When the tick arrives he says: "It…it…its…a…aaa…SUPERVILLAIN!!!

THANK YOU GOD!"

Later they seemed to drop that premise.

I’ve followed the comics and seen quite a few of the animated episodes. I found the comics to be better. The animated series has a disturbing lack of ninjas.

Plus the comics have…The Red Scare. Easily my favorite cartoon villain ever.

I loved the cartoon – like others here I thought seeing all the different supercharacters they could come up with was a riot:

Fire me, boy!

Rocket from the sockets!

I’m filled with tinier men!

Read a book!

–Pig-Leg, er, The Deadly Bulb, er, uh, Cliffy

Yeah, that’s it.

God, The Deadly Bulb… I’d forgotten about that guy. Ben Edlund is absolutely insane, I swear.

And I definitely agree – ninjas would have been a most welcome addition to the animated series. Too much to hope for that they show up in the live-action show?

(Just ordered the entire series of the animated series from eBay – I can’t wait! When it shows up, I’m going to have a twelve-hour Tickfest at my apartment. They’ll probably find me days later with my head exploded from sheer joy.)

I’m in Arlington Heights, so can I come to the Tickfest? You can see Little Wooden Boy, live. (so to speak)
“I BOUGHT HIS BRAIN!”

a two headed bluebird that only speaks high school French,
it doesn’t get any better than that!

Hang it all. I love The Tick, both in cartoon and comic form, yet I’ve had nothing useful to add to this discussion. In addition, there’s no hope of me making it to what sounds like a fun little TickFest – the likelihood of me being in front of a TV for the live show is practically nil.

I think I’ll go sulk in my tent like some guy from Chile.

Gravity is a harsh mistress.

!!!WARNING - SPOILERS!!!

IF you think that the cartoon is a bastardization of the comic, then I’m afraid you might find that the live action show is a bastardization of the cartoon.

Oh, it’s not bad. I was quite disappointed by the changes in characters (Liberty for Maid, and what’s with “Bat Manuel”? Is this all part of the Ricky Martin/Latin music cash-in craze?) - I much preferred Die Fleidurmouse (sp?)

But it does have it’s moments. I must confess that something goes seriously missing with the jumping from roof-to-roof/smashing effects. You can almost see the wires and foam cinder blocks. This is why I feel it shouldn’t have gone beyond the cartoon. You can accept things happening in the cartoon and play with physics and effects more and the viewer will generally accept it. But to transfer superpowers onto the live screen just makes them look, well, “hokey”.

Like that show “Nightman”? The one where they still use that blue screen and cheap CGI technology for when he flies?

(shudder)

You may think that that may have been the intention, I say “wait and see for yourself”. The writers don’t play it up like that, not even for a cheap laugh. When the cartoon Tick leaps from building to building, you accept the idea that he’s creating a lot of damage. The live version creates damage almost for the sake of it… the subtlety of the joke is gone. It just “doesn’t work”.

Not only that, but the live Tick is played as a real dolt. I mean cluuuuuuu-less! They play on the sexual tension between American Mai-err… I mean “Captain Liberty” and “Bat Manuel”, and even when they end up-well…

The Tick stands there and just doesn’t get it.

Nah.

The guy playing Arthur does pretty good, though. Seems like he came from the “Steve Guttenberg Acting Academy” with the “Most likely to be like Steve” award.

And it’s nice to see Chistopher Lloyd still getting work.
Now, if this desciption of events comes as a surprise to you come Thursday, and you end up saying “What the HELL was Darq talking about?” Then, hopefully for the better, they rewrote and refilmed the pilot. And to that I say…

[Roseanna Danna]

…never mind

[/Roseanna Danna]

Oh, I forgot to add…

[Sewer Urchin]

Eah…Don’tTouchMe. VeryPoisonous.

[/Sewer Urchin]

It was not Roseann Roseanna Danna (or however it’s spelled) that said that, it’s another Radner character called Emily Lutella (I don’t think I spelled that right either).

Sewer Urchin: Down here I’m kind of the apotheosis of cool.

Probably one of MY favorite lines from The Tick.

“Liar! Liar! Pants on FIRE!”

Are the comics still in print? Did they make a book of them or anything? Is there a box set of Tick episodes?
