John Holmes is often called the “King of Porn” but I totally disagree for several reasons.

Other than penis size, Holmes really nothing to offer, and a large part of his career (and personal life) was a wreck. For one thing, IMO Holmes was not a handsome man. Okay, Ron Jeremy isn’t exactly Brad Pitt either, but Jeremy has always had a friendly look about him. He has always looked like a nice guy who would be the life of the party. Holmes was just nasty looking (imo).

And despite Holmes’ unusual size, for a large part of his career, he was unable to achieve a complete erection. The joke in the industry was that John’s penis was so huge, a full erection would have rendered him unconscious. In reality, Holmes was abusing cocaine, benzos, and alcohol. This made full erections impossible for him.

Holmes also burglarized cars in Los Angeles, and we all know that his association in drug culture lead to his being implicated in the Wonderland Murders.

But worst of all, Holmes continued to have unprotected sex in films after learning that he had HIV. These included some anal scenes. Although I don’t think he was bi, Holmes did “gay for pay” and starred in some gay films as well as prostituting himself out to men. He put a lot of female actresses at risk with this behavior. Holmes died of AIDS in 1988 and the industry didn’t seem to mourn him. He’s really now just a footnote in the world of porn.

Again, apart from penis size, Holmes simply had little else.

So, does that make Ron Jeremy the true porn king in my book? Not quite. While Ron is living proof that even an overweight, not-so-attractive man can get hot women, he comes in #2 for me. I’m voting for the legendary Jamie Gillis as the true King of Porn.

Jamie truly was a master at his craft and was willing to do just about everything. He worked in the business for over three decades and he was beloved by the industry. He was both an accomplished actor and very funny. And you can tell that he is controlling every seen he’s in. It’s pretty apparent that Jamie loved having sex on camera, and the stories from his private life support that.

Jamie lived an interesting life. He avoided drugs but was an expert in fine wine and food. And he enjoyed expensive cigars. Female porn stars would often comment that Jamie was one of the few men in the business who knew what sex was all about. And anytime Jamie appeared on screen, he was entertaining as hell.

Gone since 2010, Jamie is not forgotten. He will always be The King no matter what.

Seen a lot of porn, never heard of Holmes. I have heard of Jamie Gillis, so by that standard he is more of a king than Holmes.

Ron Jeremy is the king.

It doesn’t matter how porn stars carry themselves off the camera. All that stuff is irrelevant. The only thing that matters is how big your fan base is.
Ron is the only guy I know of that has a rather large male hetero’ fan base. No other male porn star comes close. (As far as I know.)

Met both of them at a couple parties in the Hollywood hills. Holmes was a complete asshole, Ron was a cool guy.

All of these guys have or had to squeeze their penises at the base like a vise grip to maintain an erection, and also ended up broke in poor health.

Ron Jeremy is doing very well for himself and is in good health for a 60+ year old man.
And I don’t know where you’re getting that bit about “squeezing at the base”, penises don’t work that way.

I would not be surprised, Amateur Barbarian, considering that Holmes has been dead 27 years which is 7 or 8 longer than he had a porn career, and in the last years that career was not that much of one due to his drug/crime/health issues. Holmes’ vids that continue to be in print are not exactly remastered from curatorial-quality copies, and a lot of what he did were not really “classics”, most of his volume of film time probably being peepbooth short loops. I know my “classic porn” favorites did not include most of his. So I can imagine someone oblivious to Johnny Wadd, especially in the younger age group.

Shakes, Jeremy had a bad scare a couple years ago, drove himself to the ER and they detected an aortic aneurysm about to burst and kill him. Seems to be well recovered and has continued succesfully marketing his brand.

You make good points: of the 70s generation Gillis had one of the longer careers and the part about “willing to do just about everything” helped him. In the age of plot porn as part of the crop of male pornstars who at one point or another had or would have legit acting gigs, he was often a go-to guy to play a creepy or dark character. When plotted porn collapsed and when the gym rats moved in, he was quick to branch out into the kink/fetish segment and “gonzo porn”. The difference with him being that while some other porn people would into “do anything” mode out of dire desperation – and Holmes seemed to be one of them – Gillis did seem to choose to do so knowing what he was doing and because that did suit his tastes.

As someone who grew up and saw porn go from seedy back alley theaters to massive growth via VCRs, and finally ubiquitousness via high speed internet, there can be no single ‘King of Porn’ anymore. It’s like asking who’s the biggest YouTube star. Internet porn is so common and available and accessible and fluid (especially compared to the old days) names and titles and lists of such have no meaning…

Interesting points. In years past, male stars were pretty much chosen for their ability to perform (i.e., maintain an erection and deliver the “money shot” on cue). Most of them were decent looking with good but not perfect bodies. The majority could at least deliver their lines without embarrassing themselves, and a few were surprising funny and good actors. Their endowment was usually slightly above average. Since Viagra came out, however, a lot of male stars seem to be body builders or guys with insane amounts of muscle.

One thing I prefer about vintage porn is that almost all of the men from that era were circumcised. Now it’s about 50/50. Just my opinion but I’m not a fan of looking at an uncircumcised penis.
