But you can’t take away the actor’s innate charm, humanity and empathy when talking about the character. That’s my point. Archie *was *likable, despite his racism, sexism and all of his other flaws. Trump is absolutely not.
On the bus here in Honolulu the other day, some clown was sitting up front in the seats that face left and right rather than forward. He was dressed in some sort of American-flag shirt and holding up to his chest, cover facing outward, a copy of I think it was Time magazine. The cover was a photo of Kim and Chump shaking hands. He just sat there, staring forward, wearing his flag and keeping that magazine up for all to see, saying nothing. I resisted the urge to spit on him.
Leave it to a Republican to take “Why can’t I treat innocent childeren like animals?” to the Supreme Court.
I think the Manhattan Madam is single-handedly responsible for the continued success of the American botox industry.
Colour me curious what happens to the children who cannot be reunited with their parents (and I assume there will be at least a few dozen in this situation ultimately). Has the U.S. informally adopted them? Will they be kept and fed and then deported when they reach some arbitrary age?
That’s not what haunts me.
What haunts me is parents fleeing death and terror in their native lands. Offered the chance to leave their children in America, and going home to face a grim future knowing only that their kids are more or less safe…How many might take it? Willingly, sorta kinda.
Have we updated Sophie’s Choice, but without Germans?
Archie Bunker is emblematic of a bygone era. The man had barely (if even) a high school education, held a grunty job on the docks, and yet, owned a house in fucking Flushing Queens. Would that even be possible today?
It seems as though society is more stable when we are not heeling the necks of ignorant assholes to the ground. I know we all want to, but maybe stomping them down is not the best way to go.
CNN is reporting Hope Hicks was just seen boarding Air Force One. Guess there’ll be a Do Not Disturb sign on the presidential bedroom on today’s flight.
A small quibble, but Archie didn’t work at “the docks”. He worked at the loading dock of the Pendergast Tool & Die Company. He was a foreman, then promoted to dispatcher. Eventually, of course, he bought Kelsey’s Bar.
Was it ever actually established whether or not he was union?
A search hit imdb.com:
The Bunkers and Inflation: Part 1
Storyline : “Archie’s union calls a strike, leaving the family to begin adjusting to not having a steady income.”
While the house shown was from Flushing, Archie supposedly lived in Astoria. Either way, the only way that would be possible today is if the house had been passed down through the generations. Otherwise, he would need to have two earners to qualify for the mortgage, given the nature of his work.
Since they were ordered not to communicate with each other in any way, this is straight-up witness tampering.
LOCK HIM UP!!!
Wouldn’t at all surprise me if they rule in favor of Trump’s inhumanity.
Drone attack on Venezuelan president. I would not be surprised if this was directed by Bolton and the orange stooge.
Is there a cite for this? quick search didn’t pull up anything.
IMHO, there is so much trump shit, then there is no need to make up stuff. It only plays into his base that seize upon any exaggeration or sarcasm to deny the beam in Trumps eye. YMMV
Maduro is accusing Colombia.
In other news, Trump’s policies have indeed reduced the amount of foreigners going to the US. Paying ones, in the case of Business School students. Schools in Spain, Singapore or Canada don’t mind.
As much as I despise both Bolton and Crunchy Howard, I would expect an operation by any of our government intelligence services would result in Maduro being dead dead dead. Or at least seriously injured.
My guess is this was an internal attempt by some amateurs.
Of course if this was farmed out to Roger Stone and some dude he met at a gun show who knew where he could get some drones and C4 on the cheap, well then all bets are off.
I think he meant radical as in “strike at the root” – you know, chop away at the foundation of this country, despite their alleged love for the founding fathers.
God what a shit show Venezuela has become. I remember teaching international students from there back in 2013 and 2014 and they were desperate to get out and stay out. Anyone with the means to escape has. Not to compare the strength of their former democracy to ours, but Venezuela’s a cautionary tale of what happens when you vote for a demagogue to shake things up and let him get away with calling the news fake, let him get away with purging (and later jailing) bureaucrats who believe more in doing their jobs for the good of the country rather than showing loyalty, and let him get away with attacks on the rule of law.
He’s hurting higher education in the process, but he gives not a single dingleberry.
