… thinking about it, ISTR that movies about groups such as the SEALs, Green Berets, RECON, etc. would call them elite, but the most recent ones I’ve watched did not. Because elite truly has become a dirty word to a lot of people, including a lot of the people most likely to watch movies where people in uniform shoot at each other. If you remade Sergeant York today, you might want to be very, very careful to avoid the e-word. Which makes me sad both for the dictionary and for the men and women who have earned that label, damnit.
