I suspect that part of the rub is having the Walrus, who was one of the armchair warriors who goaded us into the Iraq debacle, dictate to John Kelly - a real warrior - how to best use the military. I rather think that John Kelly was of the opinion that using the US armed forces to stop a border control problem was a particularly good example of best use.
I suspect that the few remaining adults in the room are on their way out. It started with McGahn. Kelly and Mattis are soon to follow.
But if she gets replaced, it will be someone more to Bolton’s and Don’s liking, someone who probably isn’t a family type.

Re: trade war
Remember the Viet Nam war. America inflicted great damage on Vietnam, killing many more of their troops and civilians than they they did us.
And yet…we lost the war.
That’s how I see our trade war with China. There will be major consequences for China - already are. But they’re going to fight to defend their sovereignty, and they have no elections – we do. We don’t have a high tolerance for pain. China does. We can think we’re ‘winning’…and lose. That’s probably how this ends.
Of course that’s how this ends: China has all the leverage.
They do, and they don’t.

A couple weeks ago Nielson claimed that there’s been no Chinese election meddling, but I don’t find myself too convinced of that. And of course this contradicts Cheetoface’s claim, about a week before Nielson’s announcement, that there are Chinese cyberthreats.
