Most likely it’s because Trump is a classless boor, but I’m also wondering how many of the White House staff have been furloughed. Maybe they just couldn’t whip up the usual banquet due to being short-staffed.
As an aside, I wonder if those people who work at the White House can nip down to the kitchen and ask the cook for a quick meal (depending on their position, and their relationship with the cook, I’m sure). More likely, I suppose, there’s some sort of lunchroom.
I’m also sparing a moment’s pity for the cooks and chefs there. They’ve gotta be about the best around, and they’re cooking for…Trump. I’m picturing chefs sobbing into their toques, saying “I just can’t take it anymore! Thirty years experience cooking and he wants well-done steaks and Quarter Pounders!”
Well I did in one thread propose providing all of California’s fresh water by building a dozen or so biggest-ever coastal nuke desal plants. People weren’t so keen on this idea. Something something about fault zones, although I wasn’t really paying attention.

Yes, Trump hurt Germany’s feelings probably more than Canada’s. It’s hinted at in this very commendable article in the New Yorker, like our big Daddy of more than 70 years doesn’t love us anymore, though we were almost always good and obedient children. It’s really staggering what damage Trump has done to the transatlantic relations.
