The Trump Administration: A Clusterfuck in the Making

You have to fill out a form to get the report there… it’s on CNBC, MSNBC, etc, if you don’t want to do that.

I’d respond to your earlier post if I could find it, but it’s up there… somewhere.

You said that you didn’t think that Trump would be responsible for the next recession, and for that, I actually completely agree. You could even say that Trump may have delayed the next recession, that we would have already had one, were it not for his policies.

A recession is nothing terrible, it’s just a quarter of negative growth. Not that big a deal, we typically have one of those far more often than once every 9 years. It’s only when it is consecutive quarters do people start throwing around terms like “depression”, and even then, it’s not really affecting most people directly.

Trump’s policies will, however, make the next recession much worse than it would be otherwise. We may very well have a depression, and that would be entirely on him. Assuming he reacts to a recession with teh calm and guided responses he has shown so far, everything that he does will make it worse, and I don’t know for sure that wouldn’t be the intent.

Interesting. I read that guy’s book on Madoff. I have no real feelings about GE one way or the other, but if he’s right and a major, century-old company goes the way of Enron… Ugh.

There isn’t all that much left of GE anyway - most of its divisions under Welch have been sold or spun off already, or are scheduled to be soon. The “new GE” under Culp is just Aviation and Power Systems, and of those only Aviation is profitable. Power Systems is in a sunset industry and be the designated failure if need be.

Welch’s game-playing with Capital was never all that much of a secret, but it was decades ago. I don’t see what’s new now.

Sounds like it’s time for… The GE Handshake!

The GE discussion thread. Full of accounting and numbers and other mathy goodness!

GE’s not just a “major, century-old company”. It’s literally Thomas Edison’s company and is kinda iconic to us business historian nerds. :sniff:

Well, half is Edison’s company. The other half is the virtually forgotten Thompson-Houston Electric Company of Lynn, Massachusetts. They still have a big plant here is Lynn that makes (or until recently made) aircraft engines (and noisily tested them).

It’s most certainly still there; I worked there for a number of years. But there’s no relic of Thomson-Houston left - that was the former West Lynn plant, where there is now a Market Basket store and a vast parking lot covering a Superfund site.

Market Basket is still a thing?

I used to see them in the Southern California suburbs some fifty-five years ago, but not for at least forty-five.

Must be a different chain with the same name. DeMoulas Market Basket is New England-based and very much in business, following the success of a customer-led coup a couple of years ago.

Wow. The whole Trump crew really is going all-in on White Nationalism it seems. Sad part is, this strategy may just win them the election.

Bershire Hathaway is sitting on a massive cash hoard at the moment, and I suspect that Warren Buffett and Co. may just know what they are doing…

I’m not sure I remember a previous instance of Trump so openly reminding us that an Administration member he’s criticizing is his own appointee. Does he just imagine we’ve all forgotten about his claim to appoint “only the best people”?

Holy shit! I’ve known you (online) for 20 years, and I never knew you lived in LYNN!

Mail me some steamed clams, will you? And fried clams, and clam chowder, and clam fritters, and clam burgers…

I’ll reciprocate with bagels, knishes, and hot pastrami.

I usually read Warren Buffett’s letter to the shareholders and he says that he would invest the cash hoard if he could find something worth buying. Part of the problem is how big Berkshire Hathaway is. Googling, the cash hoard amounts to over $112 billion. (And they’re not the only one. Lots of big companies like Apple, Microsoft and so forth have lots of cash. Collectively a couple trillion.)

I have a vision of a pack of slobbering dogs following the letter carrier down the street to Ukulele Ike’s house…

This dreadful feeling that now fills me and threatens to overpower my medication is the realization we may have yet to see peak clusterfuckery…

I’m pretty sure I’d think of SOMETHING to create profit if Warren threw some of that my way! I just need the right priming to get my creative juices started!

I thought I was coining a term today, but somebody already beat me to it.
