One line from Trump’s speech to the UN mission staff last week got my attention (with my bolding):

He’s been doing that for quite a while now. The press is the enemy. Fucking enemy. The man is a psycho. It works, too. Now the whistleblower’s lawyers are concerned about his safety. That does have an effect on the likelihood of future whistleblowers to be willing to say something.
His enemies are all internal. In the US, and his head.

So by describing Schiff as “treasonous”, Trump’s subconscious reptilian brain knows he himself is a traitor. Trump lives in such a fantastical alternate reality, it’s hard to judge whether he actually realizes this or not (how much is it con job?). This one doesn’t seem to be illegal so much as pathetic, desperately attempting to find something to discredit Mueller. And trying to justify it by saying they just want to find out about election interference in the last election. How many people not wearing a MAGA hat are going to believe that?
