I have to say the most disheartening thing to me in this whole jaw-dropping debacle is the extent to which Republicans are willing to overlook anything – including the total dismantle of long-respected practices, to say nothing of the law itself – in order to further their partisan objectives. Dark money has left a big, ugly and perhaps irrevocable mark.
Still, I remain in hope that at some point, the weight of the evidence, together with public pressure, will force their hand. If not, there is an opportunity in 2018 to gain Democratic seats in the House, and that might make the difference.

Yes, let’s give him credit for not going full on General Ripper. We know how close previous presidents have been to initiating a unilateral nuclear attack. I remember when Johnson was in a rage about how his pants weren’t fitting right and nearly nuked Laos, and Carter’s anger over the Iranian hostage crisis nearly resulted in French Guiana being wiped off the map. Reagan was fortunately too forgetful to follow through on his plans to send the bombers to Russia, and Bill Clinton was going to nuke Serbia as a distraction from the Monica Lewinsky scandal but was narrowly talked down by Madeleine Albright.
