In April, Trump had a phone call with murderous Philippine strongman Rodrigo Duterte. A transcript of the call has been obtained by The Intercept (I’m not familiar with this source, but they were quoted by Pro Publica). In the call, Trump praised Duterte’s handling of the drug problem in the Philippines, saying, in part:

Duterte’s drug war is marked by the wholesale slaughter of drug dealers and users. Police have killed an estimated 7000 people in the year since Duterte took power, and Duterte has encouraged vigilantism against drug dealers and users. When he wants to brag, Duterte compares himself to Hitler.
To be fair, the Obama administration did give the Philippine military weapons, and while the admin didn’t give weapons directly to the National Police (who are behind many extrajudicial executions), it did allow US weapons manufacturers to sell to them. Also, small arms are pretty fungible, so giving them to the military but not the National Police doesn’t absolve us of complicity. While Obama offered tepid criticism of Duterte in public, Obama too deserves criticism for his tangible support of Duterte.
But, Obama’s not the President anymore and Trump is, god forgive us all. And this thread is about Trump. So ::clears throat::
