That there was at least one non-Nazi who behaved badly doesn’t justify, at all, all the Nazis behaving badly, including the Nazis who surrounded and attacked anti-racist protesters, and including the Nazi who drove a car into a crowd and killed people.
A journalist’s job is to report the facts. A President’s job is to set the moral tone for a country in crisis. Let me give you a sense of what would have been an appropriate response from the President of the United States:

If it’s not in self-defense or defense of another? In terms of ideology - no. In terms of behavior - yes, it makes one a violent thug just like if a Nazi hits someone with a club he’s a violent thug.
You (plural) keep trying to say that one side’s violent thugs are not as bad as the other side’s. I am saying yes, in terms of behavior, just as bad. And ideology does not bash heads. Clubbing people does.

So what you’re saying is, shouting hate speech, brandishing weapons, and storming a protest in the form of a violent torchwielding mob doesn’t count as “behavior”. None of that can be factored in in assessing the two groups. Tis only the physical attacks that can be counted.
That’s the thing about murder. It kinda outweighs other stuff.
It’s not just as bad. Jews (and those non-Jews who wanted to protect Jews) who attacked Nazis in WWII Germany weren’t as bad as Nazis who attacked Jews. Slaves (and abolitionists) who attacked their masters and other white people during slavery weren’t as bad as their masters who had them whipped, beaten, raped, and killed. Black people (and other Civil Rights supporters) who attacked the KKK and other white supremacists during Jim Crow weren’t as bad as the KKK and white supremacists who attacked black people.
And they’re not the same now.
Maybe if the people were Brown, or spoke Arabic. Now that shit would be scary.
