I don’t think it’s even that deep. Thump just wants HEADLINES! He’ll probably backpedal on this, then raise it again, rinse and repeat. Whatever generates headlines.
What next? “We hereby recognize Monaco as the right and proper capital of Spain, as it always should have been.”
And don’t forget, “Fuck you, Obama!!”
That’s giving him WAY to much credit. You explanation would require that he actually had considered the policy implications of his statement and even had the remotest inkling of a strategy for that region of the world. This is purely throwing more red meat at his base, without the slightest thought as to possible diplomatic consequences.
I’m reminded of something that flew across my twitter feed. Something to the effect of:
If Trump were indeed following Putin’s orders, he wouldn’t be doing anything different.
I’m at a loss for rational explanations. I find that irrational explanations probably explain just as much as rational ones where these morons are concerned. My first suspicion is pointed in the direction of the Muslim hating “These are the End Times” Christian warriors who infest the White House. This could injure our already rapidly deteriorating relationship with Turkey beyond repair, and with that, NATO would be in a world of some serious hurt, which circles back to what you write above.
That was yesterday’s decision to destroy the national parks in Utah
That’s his motivation for everything he does.
And the US Consulate in Jerusalem has issued a security warning to its employees:
“With widespread calls for demonstrations beginning December 6 in Jerusalem and the West Bank, U.S. government employees and their family members are not permitted until further notice to conduct personal travel in Jerusalem’s Old City and in the West Bank, to include Bethlehem and Jericho. Official travel by U.S. government employees in Jerusalem’s Old City and in the West Bank is permitted only to conduct essential travel and with additional security measures. United States citizens should avoid areas where crowds have gathered and where there is increased police and/or military presence. We recommend that U.S. citizens take into consideration these restrictions and the additional guidance contained in the Department of State’s travel warning for Israel, the West Bank and Gaza when making decisions regarding their travel.”
The Intercept is a liberal site, so I don’t know how much validity we can give to this, but it made it into today’s Sarah Huckabee press questions today.
TRUMP WHITE HOUSE WEIGHING PLANS FOR PRIVATE SPIES TO COUNTER “DEEP STATE” ENEMIES
And thump is chortling with glee that a couple of words from him (whether he means them or not) causes people half a world away to run around in circles. How he must revel in this kind of power–he could never cause this level of upset and disruption when he was a mere rich guy-speculator-mogul. Sure, he could fire a few people, declare bankruptcy on a slow day, but that was small potatoes compared to causing people (everyone from heads of state to ordinary Americans) around the world to pee their pants in response to thump wiggling his tiny p---- um, pinky finger, yeah, *pinky *finger.
He wants riots to gin up support for his travel ban and future anti-Islamic acts. And he is getting them.
Anybody who thinks Trump isn’t still listening to Steve Bannon hasn’t been paying attention.
There is that.
There’s also the fact that in the past year or so, Muslims haven’t been doing what Trump needs them to do in order to make them the official reason for declaring emergency powers to suspend Constitutional rights and such. So many mass killings, lately, have been by white guys from Christian backgrounds: last month’s killings at the Northern California elementary school and at the Texas church; the Las Vegas slaughter.
So this ‘move the embassy to Jerusalem’ idea might just jump-start some action that would let the Trump Administration move forward with some good hatemongering, followed by some long-overdue progress in moving toward a police state.
ETA: as JohnT just said more succinctly.
Bannon is an anarchist and seems Trump is as well, or else the anarchists puppet. IIRC I saw interviews with Bannon where he stated he was an anarchist. Now if you were a real anarchist, it sure looks like the past 11 months have been about deconstructing the pillars of American society.
Or a puppet of our biggest advisory Russia. Well, not really, China is a bigger long term advisory but they are getting a free reign.
Oh, make no mistake about it, these things are totally true:
-
Steve Bannon wants American citizens to be murdered by terrorists so a war will start. If it takes a nuclear detonation and ten million people dead, he doesn’t care.
-
Donald Trump is perfectly fine with Americans dying as long as he profits.
Someone passed him a note in study hall saying that Muslims hate Europe more than they hate him.
It’s a thin line between being an anarchist and being a really incompetent government official.
Did you mean adversary, or something quasi-ironical?
Actually, just a few months into this clusterfuck of a Presidency, I asked a colleague what she thought Trump would be doing differently if he were really a Russian stooge bent on doing his best to undermine this country. Her priceless response was, “I think that if that were the case he’d try to be less obvious about it.”
Please remember we are talking about someone who, after a year of military and security briefings, has repeatedly expressed the belief that he commands a fleet of literally invisible warplanes. Robert Mueller, beware of the Presidential Secret Mutant Ninja Dolphin Force.
