My niece, a Navy nurse, now a Nurse Practitioner would disagree. This bullshit will only end when Trump is out, along with every one of his supporters in congress.

Think back to high school. Remember all the people who just reflexively thought the teacher was boring, and didn’t follow the lectures? What about your co-workers that somehow manage to attend meetings without retaining any content? Not to mention church.
There are people who understand that authority figures give speeches, and their role is to show up, be bored, and not really listen. School and church train them for this, and reinforce it. Most of us here always engaged with the content of the lectures / sermons / speeches, so it’s foreign to us that people would show up for any other reason. But they do.

It’s not about what they like. It’s about what they hate. Hate is the language between Trump and his supporters.

I don’t think anyone in MAGA ever said of Donnie: “What a great speaker! So articulate! He must be speaking great truths!” What it all boils down to is that he hates the same people that they do. That’s all his appeal is based on. He is the Merchant of Hate. In 2016, they could have gotten behind any other Republican and gotten the same right wing judges, the same gutting of environmental regulations, and the same tax cuts for the rich. Why jump to Donnie? Hatred. When he mocked that disabled reporter, why didn’t they recoil in horror? Because they were thinking “Fuck yeah! I have to park further from the grocery store because of those fucking woke handicapped spots!” When he villainized immigrants, they were all thinking “Fuck yeah! These people come here and get free phones and free rent and free food and can live off us forever!” Doesn’t matter that it isn’t true, it’s what they’ve been drilled into from listening to the likes of Rash Limpballs and Charlie KKKirkkk. It doesn’t matter that he dry humps a US flag onstage or holds a Bible upside down for a publicity stunt, it gives the message that he is the epitome of a patriotic Christian and as a bonus, he hates Muslims.
It isn’t that complicated, there are I estimate about 20% of the public that are racist, sexist xenophobes and they have a hero that thinks just like him. They don’t give a flying fuck in a rolling donut hole if he is a good speaker.
AND they think that he likes them.
Even when he tries to take away their health care and food subsidies and gives the money to the rich.
Something still doesn’t add up.

And in unsurprising news, after announcing a huge “Deal” in which China was supposed to buy American soybeans again, actual soybean sales to China has been three orders of magnitude less than what Trump bragged about.
“The USDA report released after the government reopened showed only two Chinese purchases of American soybeans since the summit in South Korea that totaled 332,000 metric tons,” reported the AP. “That’s well short of the 12 million metric tons that Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said China agreed to purchase by January and nowhere near the 25 million metric tons she said they would buy in each of the next three years.”
As much as I hate to undercut your point, this week China did purchase another million tons. So they will probably fall short of the 12 million, but it does look like they are starting to accelerate.
I think it’s a little more nuanced than that. He hate’s the things that people are annoyed at, and he let’s them know that it’s OK to hate and be an asshole, allowing them to hate. And, since hate is a very strong emotion, and he hates what they now hate, they think he must be right on the other things that he hates. The biggest problem with Trump is he made it OK to be an asshole.
Excellent point. He helps some people turn their annoyances into hatreds. (This doesn’t let anyone off the hook, mind you.) Surely it parallels Germany circa 1930.
