Yes, they should be charged. And prosecutors doing the charging would be fired as fast as the commander of the Greenland base who mildly disagreed with Vance. This is what living under tyranny is about.
This is great PR for Trump and ICE. The terror and fear this is causing in 100% desired. If this wasn’t unintentional then it was genius.
Trump can’t fire state prosecutors.
And if they don’t, we will…what?
Did I actually say “if”? Sorry about that.
Can he arbitrarily cut off federal funding for any state program he feels like cutting off?
Yes. But state prosecutors aren’t funded by the feds.
So SCOTUS said “bring him back”?? Or “just TRY to bring him back?”
Does this resounding NO mean “k we tried they said no?” The end?
Are we squarely in a constitutional crisis yet or are we still being mealymouthed about the language for a little bit longer…?
They said “facilitate” but felt “effectuate” unclear.
This has the potential to become a standoff between Trump and the Supremes. Will be interesting.
What do you mean by “the potential to become” here? As far as I can see, the Supreme Court issued a directive, and the Executive has said “no.”
I don’t think “well, they talked to the Salvadoran president, but he said no” is a serious argument that the Executive Branch is complying with what they were ordered to do.
The potential has been there pretty much from day 1. But up to now, I have not seen what seemed clear defiance of a SCt order. Will be interesting to see how this plays out.
It’s a game to Trump and the rest of the fascists.
And the Supreme Court has given themselves enough of a fig-leaf to say “Oh well, they tried, next case”
Gift article from the Atlantic sums it up nicely.
The bad faith of this exchange is obvious. Bukele has the power to free Abrego Garcia and send him back to the U.S. on an American plane without “smuggling” anyone or anything. But neither side wants that outcome, and so they are both pretending that it’s the other’s responsibility. It’s a game both sides are in on.
Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) says that if Garcia isn’t in the US by Wednesday, then he’s going to El Salvador.
Odds Van Hollen meets a fate similar to Rep. Leo Ryan (D) CA?
I had the same thought. Hopefully very low.
This. This is the kind of thing we should be reading about daily. Assuming this cat is serious, I don’t think it’s too hyperbolic to say he’s risking his life (actual and political) and I wish the rest of the Dems in congress would step up and do the same. Show the world that you don’t put money or your political career above saving our democracy.
Sad to say that if you could afford and wanted to I’d still advise you not to do so at this time. I don’t think it’s safe anymore.
Yes, absolutely, everyone should be concerned now.
We actually passed that point weeks ago but it’s getting more and more obvious.
They are coming first for the trans people and immigrants, but in the end everyone is on The List.
It’s definitely an improvement over Schumer’s habit of waiting 48 hours for a focus group to tell him what his opinion is, then tweeting “Somebody should DO SOMETHING!” before going back to explaining why he voted for Trump’s agenda yet again.
The leadership has no fight in them, so it’s up to the back bench to do the heavy lifting, it seems.
The allegation is true. I believe this is a similar case:
DHS told her to leave the country. She’s a citizen — and an immigration attorney
