The Trump deportation news thread

Yeah they’ll find themselves in Guatemala then or even worse in an unnamed unknown holding location for a few years.

Wow. The caveat says a lot. “They can stay as long as they provide me food.”

The Quakers religious group have sued the Trump administration over its guidance to permit ICE agents into houses of worship.

In spite of the fact that Andrew Jackson killed so many and forced so many Native Americans from their homes onto The Trail of Tears ,and stole their land, you can be assured that a great many people in the Southeast are descended from Cherokee, Creek, Seminole and other tribes.

Glad to see my local area is at least giving some verbal resistance. We’ll see how it goes. At least 30 restaurants closed temporarily over the last few days in response to this mess.

Then they will rejoice and celebrate the return of their kin.

To my knowledge, the people who are living and working here are largely treated fairly and well. We’re not talking slavery.° Likewise, the economics of the situation would say that, in the short run, we’ll just be hurting ourselves by removing a substantial workforce that we don’t have a replacement for.

Technically, they’re here illegally and deportation is completely reasonable. But it’s really not a priority and, certainly, not something worth killing ourselves to accomplish. If you believe that it is, you’re free to make that argument.

° That said, one of the reasons why I believe that we should try to move away from having so many people in the country illegally is that their illegal stature and risk of deportation opens them to extortion and threats by people who are aware of their status, and so they don’t have the full protections of the law to ensure fair treatment.

Jackson certainly stole their land, and signed the bill that evicted them, but the deaths should be laid upon Martin Van Buren, during whose term the exodus actually occurred and whose administrations racism, corruption, and general incompetence caused the deaths.

Forget “gum up the works”.

Free flights to South America! Vacation plans: Step One: call ICE on yourself.

I mean, if you have a passport, you can get back in. Get deported, have someone mail you your passport, come home rested and relaxed.

I think we need to at least start rumors that they’re doing this, if we’re looking to gum up the works.

Itinerant agricultural workers (both permitted and ‘illegal’) are often required to work in harsh conditions with minimal protective equipment, frequently without mandatory breaks, adequate shade/shelter, OJI coverage, and any kind of job security or protection from abuse. I’ve actually worked with immigrant agricultural workers picking apples (which is certainly one of the ‘better’ jobs) and it is hard fucking work that requires care and some skill in handling the fruit without bruising or gauging it, and while I wouldn’t describe the treatment as ‘harsh’, the orchard manager was constantly inveighing the workers to pick faster even though they would work for many hours on end without break.

Most of them are “here illegally” because Congress has steadfastly refused to produce immigration reform that would make it feasible for enough itinerant workers to enter the country on work visas to meet needs or to claim asylum more efficiently. Immigrants are largely productive workers doing valuable work for wages the vast majority of American citizens would turn their noses at, and they are also consumers that support local economies. They also, despite ill-informed or dishonest claims to the contrary, do not qualify for or collect any federal aid, although some states do have aid programs available to undocumented immigrants (especially pregnant women and children for obvious reasons).

This progressive vilification and persecution of immigrants—currently ‘illegal’ but you can bet that people on work and student visas are going to be given the shove next—is just one of a multitude of signs that we have shifted into high gear on the road to full-on fascist governance. You know, in addition to the tech tycoon and ‘First Buddy’ who twice gave a ‘Roman salute’ at the inauguration rally.

Just…what the fuck? Remember when Nazis were the bad guys that Indiana Jones killed by the truckful and people cheered when he threw one through the windscreen and ran over him? What…the…fuck?

If we must have a dictator, where does it say it has to be a demonstrably stupid sociopath? And wouldn’t it be more fun to be a benevolent despot rather than a Hitler 2.0?

The insane Tory Rwanda plan was abused in a similar way. There were a few volunteers who agreed to be deported to Rwanda and were paid £3000 to help them settle. At least one of them was back in the UK within a fortnight.

I think the idea of a benevolent despot is impossible. “Absolute power corrupts absolutely” as they say.

Then your understanding would match mine, so far as I can tell.

Well and shoplifting is just a crime in most states because the other ones won’t follow California’s lead on decriminilization! So, let’s go a-criming?

We can imagine justifications for any particular unlawful activity that we personally object to and decide ourselves that The Man is just out to get us and completely unreasonable. Being able to imagine said justification doesn’t change the facts of the law nor the logic that convinced the majority of our elected leaders to make the law what it is.

Up to the moment that it changes, you made a conscious decision that the crime was worth the punishment, and you have no one to blame but yourself on the day that punishment comes.

Shucks, when I was a kid King John and the Sheriff were the bad guys and Robin Hood was our hero. Because he stole from the rich and gave to the poor. T***p feels threatened when asked even for something as painless (to him) as mercy. And Right Wing Christianity cheers.

Just had our staff meeting at work. I’m a teacher.

They told us if anyone, anyone at all, comes to the school to look for any student or inquires about any student, only send them to the principal.

We have a highly Hispanic population.

Except that you, yourself, did so above. If you don’t think this is going to MAJORLY fuck with the food supply in this country, then you have very little understanding of the realities of agricultural in this country.

Oh, and those home renovations are about get a whole lot more expensive too. That quote you got last year for a new roof? Double it.

I wish all kids went to your school - or at least one like it.

Our county sheriff, who is a former social worker who ran against and beat a maga anti-vaxer in 2022, announced on Facebook a few days ago that the department’s policy is to not cooperate with ICE in any way.

A couple days later he posted about a repeat offender who had been busted driving drunk, and a maga accused him in the comments of letting “illegals” run free, to which he responded with a surprisingly cutting reply;

Whoa, nice sheriff you got there!

My understanding is that enforcing immigration law is outside the jurisdiction of the city or state. So for a city to call itself a “sanctuary city” is actually consistent with the idea of local control, which was, I thought, a cornerstone of conservative philosophy.
