My personal WAG is that Pelosi, knowing that Senate Republicans will exonerate, is giving more of them time to come out and openly admit that they won’t convict regardless of any evidence presented. The clearer it is that Republicans are corrupt, the better for the Democrats.
Also, she probably doesn’t want McConnell to bury impeachment stuff during the holiday season. That way, it will all start afresh in the new year.
So the solution to it being partisan, is to vote along with it, so it becomes nonpartisan?
That would be like someone saying, “If you don’t like something that’s unsolicited, then you should agree to it, so that it no longer is unsolicited.” :dubious:
One side of the house walks in wearing MAGA hats and carrying the sigil of Trump Uni. They then accuse the *other *side of being tribal, because look; none of them are doing what Dear Leader asked us to!
Pathetic, I agree but how do you define “losing side”? We all know how this is going to end when the Senate is done with it. I’d hardly call that a loss for Trump and his supporters. Personally, I’d rather see Trump lose at the polls than be ousted. It would a bigger blow to his infinite ego. That said, I have no faith in the American public to see through his bullshit. We are going to be in for four more years lies and self-enrichment. I hope that I’m wrong.
Amid the speechifying, I heard different arguments from the Republicans. Some said it was rushed, some said it was unfair, some said no actual crime was committed, etc.
Some said that it shouldn’t be done by just one party, that doing so was divisive, and was damaging the country. If that is really someone’s biggest problem with impeachment, if that is the argument they put forward to convince Democrats to vote ‘no’ on the articles, then it ought to be enough to convince them to vote ‘yes’.
The American public could shout loudly and clearly in the next election (as they did by 3 million votes in the last one), and trump could STILL be reelected by the Electoral College and with the help of Republican Dirty Tricks.
I think Pelosi might be miscalculating now. Given that the senate isn’t going to convict the question is how can this best work out for the Democrats? I think the best case scenario is a quick trial that’s wrapped up before Iowa votes. I also disagree that Democrats benefit when Republicans are viewed as corrupt. It’s part of the new asymmetry that Republican voters don’t care about corruption the same way Democratic voters do.
In other words, best case scenario is that Susan Collins and Cory Gardner lose their seats due to how they vote. Other than flipping those two seats, I think we’ve passed the point where anything good can come of this. Best to get it over with quickly.
Of course it’s possible; in fact, it’s a perfect example of high crimes and misdemeanors. Whether it would accomplish anything, though, is the question.
Pelosi simply cannot send this to the Senate. That’s a guaranteed loss. The GOP stayed true to Trump, and they always will, so this gambit just isn’t working. There is no reason whatsoever to believe Trump has lost support, so the only thing she can do is keep the investigations going and pray something comes out that will shake his support.
“Trump was treated less fairly than Jesus, who at least faced his accusers, which Trump would do in the trial in the Senate, if McConnell allows any witnesses at all and which hasn’t taken place yet…”
Or pray he screws up so badly and that so many people get infuriated to the point where the Republicans drop Trump like a hot potato and fight for their own political survival. That is the only scenario that is realistic, and I’m afraid we’re running out of time.
It’s a smart move by Pelosi. Given the fact that there’s national ambivalence over impeachment, this is a good move in that it lowers impeachment’s profile until such time that it’s worth taking up again (i.e. something changes the calculus to make it more likely that the Senate GOP would have to take a trial more seriously). OTOH, Pelosi has probably gone a long way toward satisfying the more outspoken members of her party in the House (i.e. The Squad) – she gave them their impeachment. And now it’s as clear as day that Mitch McConnell has no intentions of taking it seriously at this time, which is something we’ve known for a while - certainly something Pelosi has known for a while. Impeachment’s profile gets lowered and they can focus on other issues more important to voters and look less like they’re going on offense.
Moscow Mitch also says he wants it to be over quickly in the Senate. I think it makes most sense to not give Moscow Mitch what he wants.
Nancy Pelosi has a unique perspective on this whole shebang. I trust her to not only handle the information that’s *publicly *known more effectively than 99% of all Americans, but she also knows things that 99.9% of Americans aren’t privy to. I would follow this woman into combat, so if she thinks holding the Articles of Impeachment is the right thing to do, by gum, I’m behind her.
Perhaps Nancy Pelosi is settling in to wait for the pending court decisions on Trump’s taxes and various pending subpoenas for documents and witnesses. These may or may not be related to the standing Articles of Impeachment, but with more bad news emerging, there will be more pressure on Moscow Mitch and Gorky Graham. If you think about it, with the approaching election, the timing could not be more perfect to effectively remove Trump from the 2020 GOP ticket.
Are there no republicans in pink areas that are worried about their reelection? Why is it that not a single republican representative looked at the evidence and decided this was wrong?
I understand, sorta, why there are some that say this didn’t reach the level of impeachable offense (I disagree, but I can understand the view). Why was there no more than 2 democrats who thought that?
This should not be a democrat vs. republican issue. There is room for some debate on and both sides, but not to this extreme. This should have been 70% in favor of impeachment, with some Dems voting no, but way more, at least a few, Republicans voting yes.
It was the eve of impeachment when the Supreme Court forced Nixon to release the tapes, and he soon resigned. So something similar is remotely possible here before the Senate trial, but the circumstances are so different it doesn’t seem likely.
