Yeah, not only will it not happen but I think he’s (unfortunately) likely to win re-election and go the full 8 years. Unless the Dems come up with some rockstar candidate like they did with Obama… but for the most part they absolutely suck at picking candidates, so I’m not holding my breath.
Al Franken?
Autocorrect changed his name to Frankenstein, so maybe not.
I doubt Ben Stein would even be interested.
He would tweet as he was escorted out about how the Secret Service loves him. Then he’d say that he was still president. And it would get weirder from there.
Again, trouble WITH WHOM? He can’t “get in trouble” if no one calls him on it. And no one ever will.
I think it does have to be someone from the ranks, from out of left field. I’d love for it to be a woman, but the next Presidential election is too important to take any chances. IMHO it had to be someone who doesn’t invite superficial objections, kwim?
Besides that, can any politician be found with the lily-white (as it were) background of Obama–happy marriage, no financial, ethical, personal, drug-related, or other scandals of any kind in his past? Given Trump, that may not be necessary…except if it’s a woman or a man of color. They will always (unfairly) be held to a higher standard. Any woman will tell you that. (Trump’s standard is the gutter, and he does not even live up to that.)
I agree. 1) It has to be a rockstar like Obama. But not a college-professor-intellectual (I am an absolute sucker for that type, but intellectualism has the taint of elitism and thus a bad reputation in today’s USA).
But, more importantly, 2) Democrats have to turn out to vote.
The wackier The Donald gets, and it gets scarier every day, the more likely it becomes that the 25th Amendment gets its first real use outside of bad Hollywood productions. All Pence has to do is call a Cabinet meeting and get more than half of them to agree he’s too loose a cannon. Pence has the Congressional GOP already supporting him, so it could even be at their prodding. I’m already at the point of betting on that rather than waiting for the ending of From Russia With Love.
The scarier thing is that SNL just can’t keep up anymore, and the “South Park” guys already quit. How the hell do you satirize any of this?
Maybe not a “rock star”, but definitely someone with charisma. So let’s drop the whole Elizabeth Warren thing, OK? And it really should be someone from The South or The West. MN doesn’t have a very good track record in terms of Democratic candidates. Let’s stop thinking about “who would I love to see run”, but instead: “who can I support, and will they be able to win over folks who are not necessarily like me”. Someone who doesn’t look down on people and whose last name isn’t Clinton .
I disagree. I think the Democrats sucked at picking this last candidate, but overall for the past 25 years, the Democrats have picked very good candidates. After all, since 1992, the Democrats have won 4 of the last 7 elections. Of the 3 losses, one (2000) was so close that the SCOTUS stepped in and gave the position of POTUS to candidate rather than actually figure out who won. Another (2016) was actually a win in the popular election for the Democratic candidate and the other (2004) was a win for the GOP only because of the lies spread about the Democratic candidate.
So really, their track record since 1992 is pretty good.
That’s a bit like saying, “I would have won the golf round except for all that grass next to the fairway!”
There will always be lies spread about candidates. If electing a Democrat depends on the absence of lies, then things don’t look good for the Democrats.
But I don’t think you’re right. Lies were spread about Obama and Clinton 42nd. They won.
I’m ready to go for the ending in [del]Trumpfinger[/del] Goldfinger and with a British secret agent involved too.
“Oh, don’t worry mister Bond, I own the golf club, that was planned.” - Trumpfinger.
I’d vote for him. He’s smart, and he has an excellent bullshit detector.
Not only is he smart, he’s good enough and, doggone it, people like him.
I’d probably cast a vote for Jerry Brown.
Actually, as a Democrat I thought the Clinton machine was detrimental to the party. Over the past 20 years it seems like way too many Democrats were way too hesitant to even think about casting their eyes towards the Oval Office. While I made much fun of the Republican clown car, the situation on the other side was almost as pathetic. Warren should’ve run. Biden should’ve run. Pelosi and Schumer and Brown and Franken should’ve at least considered it. I’m not saying I like all these people or would’ve voted for them but more choice would’ve been welcome.
Yet, the only person that wasn’t scared to run against HRC was an old contrarian on his last political legs. And he came uncomfortably close to winning. And “it’s her turn” pissed me off as a political philosophy. No one is entitled to the Presidency.
Trump is 70 years old, overweight, and probably in lousy physical condition. Quitting to “spend more time with his family” is out, seeing as half his family is on staff with him already. I suspect he’s not going to stick around to get impeached, but rather he is going to have a health related “crisis” (quotes because the “crisis” could be real or feigned), heart attack or stroke (probably not Alzheimer’s because that would strike too close to home for Trump’s comfort), which will result in his stepping down for “the good of the country”.
Like, I’d never vote for him in a primary because he’ll be 82 in 2020, but if he wins anyway he’s guaranteed to be a damn sight better than whatever degenerate the Degenerates run.
I’d almost agree with you, except for this Nixon cosplay (as someone else put it) that he seems to be doing. It’s as if he wants to be impeached.
You are correct that there was hope that the electoral college would justify its existence by not electing the populist demagogue that the electoral college was specifically created to protect against.
Not all that many actually believed that the republicans in the electoral college would do the right thing, but there was hope. I doubt you can find anyone who seriously expected it to be given to the democrats, though that would be nice, but simply electing pence would have been an acceptable move.
The same as the hope that republicans in congress do the right thing, and either pressure trump to resign, or outright impeach him. It’s a bit doubtful that they will be able to put country over party, or even party over selfishness, but there is hope.
Although, I do have to point out that your strawman quote “I know in my heart this is not going to happen, but it’s more fun to discuss this than glumly contemplate reality.” is basically the definition of hope in the first place.
So, basically, you are complaining about people hoping that their country would not be dismantled and sold to the highest bidder. A valid complaint, as there is actually little we can do about it, except watch in horror, but kind of a dick move too. It’s like if a loved one has terminal cancer, and you make fun of the people who are hoping that a miracle occurs and they go into remission. You are probably right, but when being right means others suffer, I’d rather be wrong. YMMV.
I think someone gave him a biography of Nixon and he thought it was a How-to manual.
