The Trump Resignation Pool

When he was elected I predicted he’d ‘rage quit’ in 2 years, so put me down for Jan 20, 2019.

I do strongly agree that resignation is unimaginable and impeachment unlikely, but it’s also difficult to imagine how this chaotic administration can survive another year without somehow shooting itself in the head.

When you think of all the time-bombs waiting to go off… the debt ceiling fight, the Mueller investigation, the Russian Zapad military exercise, the North Korea nuclear threat, the natural down-cycling of the economic expansion… when you’ve seen, as we have, that Trump’s worst instincts drive him toward the most foolish crisis response… when you reflect that the White House as a whole is sorely unprepared to deal with any significant issue due to understaffing and inexperience, let alone the ongoing chaos and conflict within it… I just don’t see how this can continue another year.

So, for me, that means SOME kind of endgame plays out in the August 2018 timeframe. I can’t imagine it being resignation, but we do have a president talented in making the unimaginable happen.

Rumor has the Mueller investigation working to a conclusion sooner than we think and as the evidence comes in against him and his family, he will resign. As the ever sober and sedate Keith Olbermann reveals.

Without having to watch the Olbermann clip, is there any really compelling reason to believe this is true (and not just a Keith Olbermann fever dream)?

The people that Olbermann quotes are pretty solid. I know if you’re not aligned with him, Keith can be like a burr under a saddle, but interspersed with his vitriol, there are some good bits of reporting in there.

The core of the video is recent quotes from several journalists (whom Olbermann refers to as “small-c conservatives”) indicating that they are hearing from Republican sources that things (particularly Mueller’s investigation) are coming to a head.

Not really. The Mueller investigation may conclude sooner rather than later but I don’t know how that means anything significant.

Even if everything in the Olbermann clip is correct, I just don’t see Trump ever resigning. Anything that happens he will blame on “fake” media or America-hating Democrats and Republicans. His core of supporters will stand by him no matter what illegal or shady behavior can be proven. They have long ago lost touch with reality.

And I would suggest you actually watch the Olbermann clip. It isn’t as hair on fire over the top as Keith can be. There are several interesting things he points out.

There have been some whisperings about this and not from the usual sources, one of which is Rick Wilson, who has been a long-time (rational) Republican strategist. I concede that whisperings ain’t evidence, but there does seem to be an unusual amount of chatter.

It raises an interesting question. If there is no evidence of “collusion” - which there probably isn’t, as there is no real crime as such - then what if Mueller whips out a laundry list of other possible crimes from money laundering to campaign finance violations. Congress would be in the position of potentially prosecuting a president over something that wasn’t really the initial impetus of the investigation. I’m not sure if people are going to accept impeaching a president over crimes unrelated to his office or unrelated to winning the office. On the other hand, people in both parties are getting fed up with the Trump era and wish it were over yesterday. This is where Republicans would have to take a good hard look at Nate Silver’s data and see where think this next election cycle is going. Several weeks from now might be too early to think about that.

He’s not going to resign until he has sucked up as much moolah as he can from his “reelection campaign”.

Which is exactly what led to the impeachment of Bill Clinton. Ken Starr’s investigation was originally into the details of the Whitewater land deal, but his scope was widened, and the impeachment was for perjury and obstruction of justice in regards to Paula Jones’s sexual harassment lawsuit against Clinton.

Now I think there’s zero chance of resignation. The pubs may not like him or his 'tude, but they’re getting the religious bills and other “historic” bills signed by the Tumor. And he gets free rides on a plane and to beep horns.

Yep, but it was the opposition party prosecuting congress, and in any case, Clinton prevailed.

I go back to what I’ve said before, which is that, despite what they teach in civics and con-law classes, a president is really forced out of office for basically one reason and one reason only: the country has to be in bad shape somehow. Maybe the economy sucks. Maybe the country’s in the middle of an unpopular war. Maybe the country’s just getting out of a civil war. Trump’s race baiting might possibly qualify if we have more Charlottesvilles. But I don’t think the results of Mueller’s investigation by itself will do Trump in. Maybe the failure to appease his base plus a recession might do the trick.

Yeah, that would never happen. Certainly it would never happen to Bill Clinton.

Congress, as I recall, did pay a price in the mid-terms, losing seats that they probably should have won, which cost Gingrich his speakership. It wasn’t Clinton who paid the price for his impeachment; it was everyone around him who did, including those who tried to prosecute it. George W Bush scavenged off the remains.

But …then…theres that 'wall’thing…45s never die they just fade away!!

We just in big trouble…i don’t see an easy way out…someone will cry!!

I genuinely do not understand what you are trying to say here.

Donald Trump Will Resign and It Will Happen ‘Suddenly,’ Predicts Keith Olbermann

Again, if you’re predicting a “resignation” on January 20 of 2021 or 2025, I will not consider that eligible for the prize.

Trump will only resign or be impeached if the country’s mood sours to the point where his base cracks. That’ll only happen if the base itself comes to the conclusion that Trump isn’t making America great again. They’ll probably laugh at whatever charges Mueller brings before congress and call it a conspiracy. When the Dow loses half its value, have stagflation, or get caught in some messy war that people blame the president for, then you’ll see impeachment.
