The U.S.A., World Cup, "soccer" enthusiasm, etc

Hey all,

Tonight I went out to a bar and met up with a girl I know who was born in Liverpool. Even though she’s been in the States for years, she retains her football club allegiances. Though any possible hint of rivalry in the wake of last night’s World Cup games was averted when I quickly deflected the blame for Brazil’s goals onto the Arsenal keeper, my other friends unfamiliar with the sport still jumped on. Our Liverpool aquaintance’s red purse and sweater was enough to keep my friend Wheels going with multiple references to the band Simply Red all night, much to her ire

Since my friend who so enjoyed our passive rivalry is an ice hockey fan, I figured he was primed to become a “soccer” enthusiast, so I tried to convince him to watch the Saturday MLS match with me.

What do you suppose is the best way to gain momentum from the interest in the World Cup here in the States, now that we’re out?

BTW, my friend from Liverpool is going to England in August and will be in the vicinity of Old Trafford, possibly staying there. She kindly offered to bring me back something, despite her Liverpool allegiance. What do you suppose I ought to have her acquire, considering the difficulty of getting Man Utd apparel here in the States?
