I think it totally makes sense. Allison isolated and rejected Vanya throughout their childhoods just like everyone else. And Allison was instrumental in the suppression of her powers and her self-esteem. Allison is also the one with the power to fuck with your brain, so is the least trustworthy. And they showed how Allison could quickly go from caring and open to sharp-tongued and cruel.
Allison was literally the one who used her powers to cause Vanya to think she was ordinary, less than the rest of them. Sure as a kid at the time one can say she did have much choice about it, but then she NEVER bothered telling Vanya that she had rumored her? Really never realized what she did? Just treated her like she was nothing?
You’ve also got to remember in the first two episodes, Vanya reached out to Allison a couple of times, and was shot down. Hard. It was only after Leonard (Harold) began paying attention to her, that Allison began to reach out.
Of course she doesn’t, and particularly for Vanya who has been marginalized and isolated much of her life. There’s no reason why she couldn’t be bisexual (or even homosexual, given the way her previous relationship went). On the other hand, it’s kind of a TV trope that characters (particularly female ones) suddenly realize their real sexuality at narratively convenient moments. I suppose I should just roll with it, given everything else going on with the show.
I don’t really see it as having “realized” her sexuality. I saw a person who had one heterosexual relationship, and then had one homosexual relationship. A logical conclusion would be that she is probably bisexual, but I don’t think she said or did anything in the series that amounted to a “realization.”
BTW, wan’t it implied that Klaus also had sex with women, despite being exclusively homosexual last season? I guess sudden onset bisexuality works both ways.
Yes, he was engaging in group sex with his groupies. Again, I don’t think it’s fair to describe either situation as “sudden onset bisexuality.” There was nothing in Season 1 that implied that either Klaus or Vanya wasn’t bisexual.
It is implied that Luther, Diego, Allison, and Ben are heterosexual, because they’ve all expressed interested in persons of the opposite sex. Five also, I guess. Dolores is a female mannequin, so I suppose that counts. However, I wouldn’t object if the story took any of them in a non-straight direction. These characters haven’t declared their sexuality in any definitive terms. We might make assumptions based on their past behavior, but those are just assumptions.
Regarding Luther in Season 2, his bare-knuckled fight for Ruby seemed to take a lot of inspiration and camera angles from Brad Pitt’s fight scene in Snatch.
I was under the impression that Klaus would fuck just about anybody he found attractive.
As far as sudden onset bisexuality goes, the only person who shocked me was the 1960s Texas farm wife who went from repressed and frustrated with her husband to eager participant with Vanya in 2 seconds flat. I wasn’t alive back then but something tells me it would have taken a bit longer than that to shuck off 30-40 years of cultural programming.
Vanya was living with them for over a month. You have a stay-at-home housewife and an amnesiac out in the boonies with the husband out working most days and apparently many nights. They were pretty much in each other’s company 24/7 during that time with the only other company a non-verbal autistic child. It’s not shown but I’m comfortable accepting it.
That, and the one conversation she has with Vanya in the car made it clear that lesbianism was her actual inclination and she was suppressing it. She wasn’t just a repressed hausfrau, she was a closeted lesbian.
Here’s my theory about Lila’s multi-powers: they ALL have all the powers, all 43 of them. Team Zero just doesn’t know it yet. Lila, in a different timeline not yet revealed, got trained up in each power. Next season, if any, we’ll see Diego saying “I heard a rumor,” Klaus with gorilla-strength, etc.
I think Lila is more like Peter Petrelli. Her power is that she can mimic other’s powers. Whether she can keep them permanently or if it’s just when she’s in proximity remains to be seen.
To revisit the “Reg is an alien alien” thing (I removed the spoiler tags so it was all easier to read):
Except that some things need be truthful.
In S1E1:
See, I’d have thought that the county coroner would have noticed that Reg was an alien in a human suit.
Also:
Strange that the surgical team that installed the pacemaker didn’t notice Reg was an alien while they were poking around inside him, isn’t it?
ETA: I’m still looking for it, but I could have sworn that in some of the flashbacks/nostalgia scenes, news stories or magazines mentioned that there were other kids born the same day and way as the seven kids of the Umbrella Academy.
What is the relevance in whether or not the kids think Reg is an alien? What matters is that all the available in-world evidence from those quotes is that Reg is NOT an alien who is significantly different from a human such that he would require or be wearing a “human suit”.
If we cannot trust the evidence the show gives us, if there isn’t going to be any internal consistency, how is this different than watching Lost?
We know that the person in the autopsy report was (likely) a regular human. It still leaves open the possibility that the person autopsied was not Reg.
