The United States Declares Economic War on Canada

I’ve also seen “proud” banners reading “Maple MAGA.” It’s like someone in the US is exporting stupid, and we need a tariff barrier to stop them.

Ah.
But I thought they were nice!

In Canada as well, I’m thinking. When all those auto workers are suddenly out of a job, there’s going to be a huge outcry. Trudeau’s speech was measured and it was clearly painful for him to basically announce that our alliance may be over.

Oh good lord. Tell me you don’t actually read the Bible without telling me you don’t actually read the Bible.

(That was directed at Jack “I’m such a good Christian that I list ‘Child of God’ in my X bio” Miladin.)

New development: Ontario, Newfoundland and Quebec are joining BC in pulling US products from the provincial liquor stores.

Good. Keep it coming.

I’ll just note here the deep irony in the fact that back in 1973, it was possible for Canadian journalist and writer Gordon Sinclair to deliver a radio broadcast in praise of America as a unique force for good in the world. Not that I think it was entirely accurate even then, but how the world has changed with the enshittification of the Republican Party and the rise of the Orange Tyrant.

Could this fucking idiot get any more idiotic?

It seems the answer is “yes”.

I mean, from us in the 3rd world, this is a good/bad thing. US Hegemony has not helped us much. But a stable USA has kept Pax Americana going for several decades.

An unstable USA means deep shit for the countries I live in or care about, mostly in “shit hole” Africa

I absolutely get it, and I’m certainly not thrilled by the strong possibility, or probability, of a Pierre Poilievre prime ministership.

I sometimes wonder if, as WWII participants and their direct descendants start to die off, the global, collective understanding of how a relatively stable and peaceful west was created will die off as well, leaving a population which has taken this for granted and never truly understood how fragile this can all be. Well, now we’re finding out.

Since pretty much all of USAID has been frozen, it does mean bad news for a lot of countries.

And that’s when Nixon was president!

What would Musk have to gain from decimating the auto industry?

Compared to what we face today, Nixon was a saint. Like all previous presidents except for the current orange-hued traitorous felon, Nixon was at least a patriotic American and acted rationally, often promoting policies that would be considered progressive today, like establishing the EPA, trying to improve the health care system, and opening up trade with China. Today the Orange Fuck is literally doing the opposite.

Rhyming slang. Richard the Third = turd.

One possible answer:

Elmo has already announced huge price hikes for Teslas coming into Canada, independent of the additional costs of potential retaliatory tariffs. Tesla sales in Canada will probably wind down to near zero while this madness goes on. I don’t know how Tesla costs or sales will be affected in the US. but the North American economy going in the shitter isn’t going to be good for anybody.

There is the 50 states 50 marches movement.

Personally, I’m waiting to see what the fallout around here ends up being, considering the absolutely massive amount of trade Texas does with Mexico. Something like 30% of the exports go there, and a little over 5% of the state’s GDP is from trade with Mexico.
