I’ve tried that before, and it doesn’t work for me.
Sorry, was trying to help. I think there are some other tips in that thread, as well.
Thank you.
And the Mouse may not be getting as much cheese.
It’s largely anecdotal at this point, but both Air Canada and WestJet are reporting drops in bookings to the US, and are considering readjusting, decreasing flights to the US and increasing flights to Mexico and other places south.
Nice grass roots protest
How is US tourism to Canada going?
Or are these now deemed potential scouting missions and interdictions necessary?
Yes, Disney has been buying a lot of advertising on Canadian TV. “Special prices for Canadians,” and so on. And they do look tempting, especially with the discounts for Canadians.
But they also make Disney look desperate. A lot of Disney park business comes from Canada, and I’m sure they’re worried about how much business they’re going to lose.
We really should go up to White Rock or someplace. I mean, the border’s only four miles away.
I’m thinking of taking a trip there. I’ve enjoyed the time I’ve spent in Canada, I haven’t been to Montreal in too long, and they could use the support. My wife and I are boycotting red states and there are a lot more of those after the most recent election so if we want to stay in North America for a quick trip, Canada is looking more and more attractive.
Trump is leaning on the Canada-51st state/Governor Trudeau on a daily basis. If he does this long enough (eg several months to a year), this will sink in to a lot of Americans of a certain mindset in certain states or regions. So, for me anyway, this isn’t just a “grass roots response”, it is actually a case of personal safety - eg some MAGA asshole thinking that vandalizing the car with Ontario plates would be a really good idea, or “let’s beat up that Canadian loser walking by the bar”.
If Trump and MAGAts do eventually lose power and influence, I’m not sure how long it would take to regain trust, sadly.
Manufacturing consent for war.
There isn’t a ton of US tourism to (most of) Canada in winter, for obvious reasons. My province (PEI) is highly dependent on tourism in the summer, a large portion of which is American. This summer will be… interesting. Most Americans who will vacation in Canada will not be MAGA and won’t cause many problems. But of the hundreds of thousands of people who visit a few will probably be stupid and outspoken enough to provoke a response. Frankly, I’m anticipating at least some violence this summer.
Not until most people who remember the Trump era are dead, really. Or at least, 30 to 40 years of stable, consistent American governance. Tearing up trade deals and being generally self-centered is one thing, threatening military involvement is quite different.
For the rest of my life, I will assume that the US is a hostile nation.
My brother and his wife (staunchly non-MAGA) have been going to Grand Manan for many years on their summer vacation, always to the same place, and they love it. I haven’t asked him yet whether they’ll go again this year. That will probably depend on what the situation is by then.
ETA:
I’m so sorry you’ll feel that way, and can’t blame you in the least.
Agreed. This is especially true, I think, for people my age and younger. Older folks might remember a stronger relationship during the Cold War, but between Iraq, softwood lumber, the refusal to recognize Canadian sovereignty in the Arctic, and Trump I, Canada-US relations in my lifetime haven’t seemed all that close to me.
The bloody shame of it all is that, during my time in the RCN, when interacting with US folks, and during my time in civilian industry, working with US counterparts, and during our various travels, I have almost always had a blast with Americans.
I also recognize that a good half of the US population are not representative of Trump’s toxicity while at the same time can’t realistically and/or easily remedy the situation outside of midterms and elections.
It truly sucks.
Well, that might be coming to an end too, if the directions given to the US weather scientists is any indication. They are now forbidden to talk about the weather with their Canadian counterparts, without first getting political approval. It’s all very Stalinist.
I just read a post on Facebook, that’s a disturbing omen for the future. It’s a report of one Canadian’s experience at an archery competition in Chicago. Some excerpts:
While competing on Saturday, several competitors around me were hostile and bullying. The reason? I’m Canadian - and easily identified by a Canadian flag on my sleeve and a registration tag that said Canada on my target butt. Their ringleader was James Gagnon from New York state and he was shooting on the target butt beside me. I’ve never met this person before, yet he felt it was appropriate to call me a liar, a thief, refer to Canada a $hit hole, and so many other derogatory terms that were meant only to harass and belittle another competitor from a different country. I endured 4 hours of incessant verbal assaults intended to make me feel uncomfortable, even afraid. Unrelenting comments such as: Canada needs to be the 51st state - give up now so we don’t need to invade you. Your health care sucks - it’s terrible - US has the best. Canada caused the US inflation. Canada will fail when we stop subsidizing your industries - then we’ll take you over. All littered with profanities.
…
The ridicule didn’t let up. He was joined by several others who added their own learned opinions or snickered at my discomfort. I told them, I was just here to shoot and I was glad to be back shooting at the tournament. I didn’t engage them…. but nothing stopped them. They purposefully and doggedly pursued their torment.
…
I will not return to compete in the US. I won’t spend a red cent on travel, accommodation or registration fees - in an average year, I figure that’s over $10,000. Gone from the US economy. Congrats James - I hope you and your sycophants are proud of what you accomplished through your deplorable behaviour.
To my friends: do not underestimate the degree to which you are hated by some Americans. Not all, but many and unfortunately, they are the loudest and most vulgar, emboldened by their current government’s insipid lies. Proceed with great caution if you elect to travel in the US.
In the last few days, here in Chicago, we’ve heard ads on the radio for Disneyland (in California). That’s the first time I can remember hearing something like that in decades.
It suggests to me, as an ad guy, that Disney is recognizing that foreign visits to their U.S. properties are going to plummet, and they’re going to advertise hard to U.S. folks, in hopes of making up for some of those losses.
I’ve decided that I am not going to spend any travel money in America this year. And I am American.
I am also only buying what I absolutely need. Not spending much money at all for now.
I just saw (on AARP) a $35.00 coupon for Disneyland. I love Disneyland, but I’m not going to help any business-no matter how much I like it- make up for the revenue lost by the assholes in charge.
If an entity with that kind of money and influence isn’t going to stand up to this bullshit then I don’t want to give them my money.
