The United States Declares Economic War on Canada

Withdrawn, already discussed

It was largely taken from that address. I went to the Foundation’s X page where they posted the “real version”, and of course, the TV ad was pretty much spot on about Reagan’s opinions. But what really petted the beaver was that they auto-played the next video, which was about the original Free Trade Agreement, in which he praised Canada as the US’s greatest ally.

They just can’t help stepping on those rakes…

It’s just one distraction after the other now.

Government shutdown? Quick, announce plans to invade San Francisco.

That didn’t distract? Quick, tear down the White House.

People really don’t like that? Quick, throw an ally under the bus.

Each distraction is self-harming, so they need another distraction to distract from the first distraction.

I think coming soon will be the invasion of a country. The only question is which one. Trump’s lackeys know that a war is the ultimate distraction for the American people - they just need to time it right in order to “win” the mid-terms.

Hahaha, yes let’s make fun of the orange baboon some more…Or did anyone miss this part of the article,
“A spokesperson for Ford didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday night. But Ford previously got Trump’s attention with an electricity surcharge to U.S. states. Trump responded by doubling steel and aluminum tariffs.”
One wonders how many more jobs will be sacrificed for Ford’s grandstanding?

Venezuela.

Your takeaway from all of this is that FORD is the problem?

(checks forum, bites tongue)

There was this strange comment from the Reagan Foundation:

The Ronald Reagan Foundation & Institute also claimed the government of Ontario didn’t seek permission to use or edit Reagan’s speech, although it’s not clear it was legally required to. The foundation said it was reviewing its legal options and encouraged people to watch the unedited speech.

What “legal options”? Isn’t a president’s public speech a matter of public record?

And the Ontario ad wasn’t “edited”, and certainly wasn’t “FAKE”. They just left out a part where Reagan was talking about some specific trade issues with Japan, but the bulk of the speech, which was included verbatim, clearly expressed Reagan’s strong objections to tariffs because of how harmful they were to modern economies.

There are no legal options. It’s just part of their effort to paint Canadians as liars.

And, here we go!

Ontario’s Reagan ad that riled up Trump is coming down, Ford says

The ads were not in Canada’s national interest. But maybe they are in the U.S. national interest. I wonder how American swing voters perceive the ad.

Here are the outcomes that could come from this sort of idiocy:

  1. Trump suddenly realizes his mistakes, drops all the tariffs and protectionism, and apologizes for his errors thanking us for teaching him what his idol, Reagan, would do.
  2. Or, far more likely, Trump gets furious — doubles down on tariffs, freezes talks, and Canada ends up even more screwed as more plants shut down and more jobs head south.

Which one seems realistic? Does Ford actually believe this ad will accomplish anything? Hardly. Ford’s in the “Screw Trump, elbows up!” camp, same as Carney. They’re more interested in defiance than resolving the issues.

In reality, the economic mess we’re in isn’t Trump’s doing. It’s the product of a decade of failed domestic policy — high costs, endless red tape, and energy self-sabotage that have made Canada uncompetitive. Trump isn’t the cause; he’s simply exploiting our self-inflicted weakness.

What part of Trump’s ballroom would you like to see the Canadian Danegeld adorn?

What a bizarre take.

The ad is utterly inoffensive. It doesn’t criticize Trump. It doesn’t even mention Trump. It is comprised solely of clips of Reagan speaking.

Are you actually positing that Canada dare not make a case against tariffs?

I haven’t seen the ad. Is there a link?

Ha ha ha! Ford could not have bought the kind of advertising that Trump just gave him. Front page headlines. I (like millions and millions of others) had never heard about this ad before Trump tootled his little horn. Now it’s on every major network. I suggest you look up “Streisand Effect”

And it’s being reported that the cancelling of talks was well in the works for a few days now - Trump just seized on this as an excuse because he’s a moron. He was just pissed because Canada is not rolling over on his demands. Because Canada is being a hard negotiator. They’re “nasty”.

Well that makes me happy. I’m glad we do not have a government that rolls over for the Orange Felon’s demands.

You don’t “resolve issues” with a moron like Trump. Get this through your head.

Apologies for the Xitter link, I just clicked on links in news stories till I got the ad, and that’s where they led:

Trump was getting furious before. Trump was going to do crazy shit already. Trump had already decided that Canada was “nasty” because we were actually negotiating, and not rolling over.

Trump is going to Trump like the moron Trump he is. We are not actually negotiating with Trump.

The ad was designed to talk to the American people, because the American opposition is too afraid (or something) to actually tell them the truth; Tariffs are a stupid, stupid idea. So maybe if the hear Reagan’s words that tariffs are a stupid, stupid idea, a few of them might get a clue.

Trump is a fuckwit who will never negotiate in good faith. So it does not matter if we try to suck up to make him happy. Fuck him.

Thanks for that, @Gorsnak . Nothing offensive that I could see—or hear, because most of it is a voiceover of Reagan speaking. And obviously, nothing against Trump personally. Just why tariffs are bad.

Thanks again!

Carney is having Ford take down the ads. This suggests to me that the Canadian federal government is quite wary of making a case against Trump’s tariffs. Uzi’s posts just show this is not limited to one Canadian party.

Up to a pretty high point, Trump is influenced, on trade policy, by flattery. Consider Argentina. Due to domestic considerations, I doubt Carney can go as far with the flattery as Milei, but the PM can’t make a full case against the tariffs. It would against his nation’s national interest..

I doubt that Carney would have asked that absent Trump’s tantrum response, though. A lot of Canada’s strategy in trade negotiations with Trump has involved making the case to Americans other than Trump that tariffs are bad, in the hopes that anti-tariff pressure might come from, for example, congressional Republicans with constituents being hurt by tariffs. This ad is not any radical new strategy. It’s a continuation of a long-running theme.
