The United States Declares Economic War on Canada

Here in the uk we had the Liz Truss budget that almost every economist said would be a disaster. But she chose to believe Patrick Minford, a professor with unorthodox views and a member of several think tanks. It’s those think tanks that were pushing the Truss agenda. They’re often referred to as Tufton Street as there’s a number of them based in an office there. Their funding is extremely opaque, but Russian money is heavily suspected. The USA equivalent would be Peter Thiel and his friends.
The Truss budget did crash the economy and she was promptly removed from power.

The strength of a parliamentary system.

Wow.

Has it occurred to you that the radical extermists that support Jihad hate all western culture ? Are you ready for sharia law ?

This American as well. Canada should hit back hard, fast, and repeatedly. I sure wish there was a way for CA (where I live), OR, and WA to go rogue and join Canada in this fight. The USA has turned into a country I don’t even recognize anymore, let alone feel a part of.

Just like when the allies used Stalin’s Soviet Union to defeat Nazi Germany, the Western Democracies are going to have to make some pretty unsavory alliances to beat the US.

America needs to be stopped now for the sake of humanity.

The North American economy is extremely integrated. That was the purpose of the free trade agreements, to allow the easy flow of goods and services. We provide a lot of raw materials to the US, but we also do a lot of widgets, like auto parts. The US industries buy our raw materials, and our widgets, that then get incorporated into their widget+gidget doodads. Plus we buy US widgets and incorporate them into our widget+gidget doodads.

Raw materials are bulky, and transportation costs and methods are important. Most of them are shipped south by rail and truck, with some coastal traffic and some Great Lakes.

While there is demand for our raw materials overseas, we would have to work out entirely new trade contacts with industries overseas, then work out new transportation contratcts with shipping companies.

Our widgets are designed to be incorporated into US widget+gidgets. Maybe Europeans and Asians won’t need our widgets, because they’ve got their own internal sources, or our widgets won’t fit in their gadget+gidget products. So we need to re-tool our widget lines.

Plus, we depend on widgets from the US, for us to incorporate into our widget+gidget finished products. If the price of US widgets skyrockets, then we have to find an alternative source, which may not be easy.

Trump’s tariffs will crash our economy, but also have serious effects on the US economy, because of the interconnected nature of the North American economy.

Trump is an 18th century mercantilist.

You totally ignored the point and the question.

Are you ready for sharia law? Are you one of those whose lives that will severely impacted and/or possibly endangered ? If not you, are you ok with family members or friends who will be ?

It may be dangerous to be America’s enemy, but to be America’s friend is fatal.

Again: my sincere apologies to Canada, Mexico, (even) China, and the rest of the world – all of whom are vulnerable to similar maltreatment by this administration.

One person sending headlines to twenty co-workers isn’t going to move the international needle. My point is not that it isn’t being covered, it’s that it’s being covered badly. I just checked several local-language news sources that I know people around here look at, and the position is pretty consistent. On Der Spiegel, for example, the Greenland standoff is the top headline, as I noted above.

Further down, there is a story discussing the Canadian tariffs, but it’s pretty general, and it bundles them together with the tariffs also levied against Mexico and China. There’s no real perspective offered on the deep diplomatic violation represented by Trump’s attack on Canada, or the clear longer-term intention to destabilize the Canadian economy in preparation for a likely military invasion. It just isn’t on the radar here, because, again, the parallel invasion of Danish territory draws more European eyeballs.

I looked at the German-language Euronews, and I see the same thing. Here’s the article which you can run through a translator; note that there are fierce denials from Canadian, Mexican, and Chinese officials, and a bit of commentary on short-term economic impacts, but no real analysis on the longer-range political implications.

This, as I said, is the Trump method, and it’s why Canada, sadly, shouldn’t count on much attention or assistance from other traditional allies overseas.

@madmonk28 answered it. Just like in WWII, the democracies had to ally with the Soviets, to defeat the greater enemy, then deal with the relations with the USSR afterwards.

The US is the greater enemy now, because it is right on our borders, threatening to crash our economy, and potentially try to annex us by force. Jihadists are not doing that.

So how about you ? Are you ready for sharia law in North America ?

It’s a very silly discussion anyway. Thankfully, those who govern our respective nations, though wrong or even stupid on some issues, are smart enough to align to fight and counter things like sharia law in North America.

That there would be a textbook …

The United States poses the greater risk at this moment to Canadian sovereignty and the Canadian way of life than any jihadists. You deal with the greatest threat first.

Tariffs or subjugation of individual rights, including gender and sexual orientation, for which I may be punished or even stoned to death. Which is the greater threat to me and my family, friends, neighbors ? Gee. that’s a tough one.

Exactly. The US poses the risk of subjugation of our individual rights to be Canadians, under our Charter of Rights.

You deal with the greatest threat first, and that is the United States.

You are the enemy.

Moderating:

This nitpick is too close too trolling. I suggest you step out of this thread or at least be very careful what you type in it.

He IS a Russian and Chinese asset. He just doesn’t know it.

My take is that you never tell the baby he is wrong. Oh no. You don’t do that. All he will do is double down.

The REAL problem is the lack of backbones in congress. But it appears that they are all out for a quick buck just like Trump. And they have zero clue what this tariff will do.

What does Sharia law have to do with any of this?

What does this hijack have to do with anything?

We allied with communists and a monarchy in World War II. We didn’t have to become communist or a monarchy ourselves.

We’ve allied with and supported dozens of dictators. They didn’t make us to turn into a dictatorship (although it can now be argued that we did that to ourselves).

This sounds an awful lot like a personal issue for you and I, for one, would appreciate it if you would take it to a different thread.
