The Walking Dead; 2.04 "Cherokee Rose" (open spoilers)

I really don’t wanna be that guy, but seriously? I really just wanna talk about this show without learning what’s going to happen next. The suspense is part of what makes this show great.

Anyway, where there some people at Otis’s funeral that we haven’t seen before? There were a few background characters that I didn’t recognize.

Also, I think if I ever went up to an abandoned house post-zombie apocalypse by myself, I think I would just stand in the doorway and make as much noise as possible. Zombies can’t purposefully sneak up on anybody, so I’d rather I’d find out if they are in there first before leaving my back open.

But the problem is that you might attract the attention of a LOT of zombies. And some of them might be behind you. Better to be stealthy and spot them first.

Did anyone else notice Dale’s expression during the memorial for Otis? I thought it was odd, almost like he heard something that he thought didn’t make sense. Shane did admit that he and Otis were down to pistols when Otis “told him to go ahead” and yet Shane came back with Rick’s revolver. I’m thinking Dale picked up on this subconsciously and it’ll worry at him until he puzzles it out.

I can understand why Hershel (the old man) doesn’t want everybody staying on his place indefinitely, but you’d think he’d be thrilled for them to occupy his neighbor’s properties (assuming his neighbors are dead or gone) to try and jump start a community. I’m wondering why it hasn’t occurred to any of them yet to make a DZZ (de zombified zone) on the surrounding farms.

There were a couple of people with odd expressions on their faces during Otis’ memorial. Like you say, it might be gnawing at a few people subconsciously. Hell, there might be a few people who realized what actually happened, and aren’t saying anything because they understand why it had to be that way.

All the post-apocalyptic stories I’ve read always have humans joining back into groups again - it does seem a bit odd that Hershel is so quick to tell a bunch of (what appear to be) healthy adults to keep on moving down the road. I definitely think we haven’t heard the story of the people living in this farmhouse yet.

oh hell I think Dale straight up had a light bulb go off.

I agree with the slow pace getting old, between this show and Dexter there are flat out not enough people/dead getting deader going on this season.

I, for one, am glad there was a minimum of squishiness and splorking of zombie heads. The show has a chance if they spend enough time developing the characters. One scene I didn’t get: the owner says ‘no guns’, so the two cops pull out their pistols and put them on the hood of the truck. Then they pick them up and put them back in their holsters. What was the point of that?

I’m getting sick of them praying to Jesus every five minutes in the middle of a zombie apocalypse.

Sorry. Didn’t read the spoiler policy.

You NOOB! You don’t pray to Jesus!

Sorry. I skimmed right over the spoiler issue about previews. I’ll do better next time.

Yep. If I was Hershel and strong, competent types like Rick, Shane, and Daryl wanted to hang around, I’d encourage them to stay.

I’m surprised there was enough left of Otis to bury, and that they went back to get him. Was any of that shown? I’m pretty sure I saw the entire episode, but I didn’t see that.

Oh, I thought the burial of Otis was just a symbolic thing. Could anyone else clarify?

I don’t think they buried him, just built a little memorial out of stones.

The various wells are dug to different depths and tap into different aquifers. I don’t think one will taint the other…if my memory serves correct from what I’ve read about wells.

Something I mentioned in one of the other threads and I’ll bring it up again here, when Daryl was walking around in the house and hearing something (which he never did find) why don’t these people just say something. If they get a response, great, if not, they’ve dealing with a zombie (or animal). On top of that, if there’s another non zombie human nearby there’s a good chance they’re just as trigger happy as well. I suppose it’s just to build up suspense, but a simply “Is there anyone here?” would make everything so much easier.

Rick’s wife with the knife…any reason for that at all, or just added drama?

Lastly, does anyone else keep seeing John Lithgow as Hershel? I know it’s just from seeing him (John) in Dexter since he played a similarly soft spoken minister type character, but it always throws me off for the first few seconds.

I wonder how long the zombie virus can survive in water. With 99% of the human race rotting zombies, I wouldn’t trust any water supply unless it was bottled pre-outbreak.

That makes sense. I’m wondering “Why do you need that big a pile?” Like they really needed to bury him.

Joey P, a big fat ditto for saying something when they think zombies may be near. Especially in the search for Sophia, in the house. Daryl didn’t say anything until he was outside, did he? She may have been sleeping upstairs.

I do like that they wrote that message on the windshield.

I thought the same thing. It looked like they retrieved his body and buried him standing up.

Re: Otis’s cairn- there are numerous instances in the Old Testament of people piling stones high to commemorate some special event or other, and these are very religious people, so probably an OT tribute to Otis.

I think Hershel has two very practical concerns about the people staying on:

1- Potential danger to his daughters (on the one hand you could see it as potential sons-in-law, but otoh it’s potential trouble with more single guys than he has daughters)
2- They only have so much food, fuel, and lodging available

I actually did like Hershel telling about his evil father; wasn’t what you’d expect to come from him since he’s so family oriented.

Yeah, if the wells tap the same water there would be no reason to have more than one.

Protection, not that it would have been all that useful but they can’t just be wandering around unarmed.
