The Walking Dead; 2.04 "Cherokee Rose" (open spoilers)

Yes, the Hershel is clearly hiding something and you don’t need to know anything about the comics to know that. If you really want to know how this played out in the comic click the following spoiler.

He has all of his undead family members, friends, & neighbors chained up in the barn because he hopes somebody might come up with a cure someday.

They’re aren’t following the comic exactly, but the major plot points are coming through.

Anyone else think it was really insensetive of Glenn not to ask her if she knew it? The odds are pretty good she didn’t, and the possiblity should been really obivous to anyone.

Well, whatever pathogen is causing this clearly isn’t playing by the normal laws of biology. RL viruses (viri?) cant survive long in a rotting corpse either. Bacteria can however, even thrive. Their livestock have been drinking that same water for awhile with no ill effects; it probally was safe to drink, at least after boiling. I wouldn’t though, unless I had no other choice. Only humans become zombies, but other animals still die from zombie bites or other exposure to the pathogen.

Well in Georgia, there really is no reason to have more than one. Except as a plot device, so you can befoul one well with zombie juice and still have a well to spare. So really the premise is off. But assuming you do have two wells, yes, contamination from one can leach to the other. I have seen it happen.

I thought about that, too, but maybe it only occurred to me because I grew up in a rural community where everybody knows everybody, and if you have a zombie down your well, it’s apt to be cousin Jack, or maybe Mr. Dawson from up the road. The possibility might not have occurred to Glenn, him being a city boy.

It also may not have occurred to the writers.

I just totally read the spoiler by accident when I quoted that this :smack:
Anyways, this was another reason he reminds me so much of John Lithgow from Dexter.

I didn’t, it didn’t even cross my mind. In fact, I really didn’t even understand why you asked and read this a few times to make sure I was reading it properly. It wasn’t until I saw Spoke’s reply that it made sense. I don’t think it was insensitve of him at all to not ask.

I’m not sure if it’s been made implicitly clear on the show of if it’s only been implied, but at least on The Talking Dead they came right out and said that non human animals cannot become zombies and I really don’t think this show is deep enough to get into the biology of whether or not they could be carriers of it without actually having the disease (and then be able to pass it back to a human that ate their meat or drank their milk)…especially since the CDC stuff was only on for half an episode.
So, FWIW, just because an animal was drinking the water, doesn’t mean it’s safe for humans to drink. Also, they really haven’t been all that clear on whether or not humans will get infected from getting zombie guts on them and/or in them (eating, getting it in their eyes/ears/mouth/wounds). If the only way they can get infected is via a bite, I would think they’d be safe, at least from turning into a zombie, to drink the water. Now, drinking water that had a rotting corpse in it is a different story. I’d still not want to do that. Especially considering there are 4 other wells available.

The extradition of the well zombie made me think of all the stupid corporate team building exercises I’ve done. Why couldn’t we have an interesting scenario like that? Then again, I think my co workers may be even stupider than these people.

Seriously? Giving up your guns just like that? These are the people that love to talk, talk, talk, and talk some more about every damn thing. And they don’t have any discussion about it?

About all that talking, I think one of the main issues I’m having with the show is that so much of the talking is among Lori, Rick and Shane. Those are the three characters I care the least about (well, except for that damn kid who needs to be found: dead or alive). They bore me. Their conversations bore me. Their love triangle doesn’t interest me in the least.

I did like Glen trying to impress Maggie when they were riding to the pharmacy. Did that awkward conversation bring me back to high school!

That Daryl sure is a sensitive redneck. How about that Cherokee rose monologue?

How much time has elapsed since Rick returned? I assume there is going to be some question as to who the daddy is?

I’ve been curious about the timeline and here’s what I have. Feel free to chime in with corrections or theories on missing time.

Season 1

I’m actually more curious about how long it’s been since Rick left the hospital, but I guess his time with Morgan is unknown, so for this post I’ll just use the day he rode into Atlanta as the start.

Day 1- Rick rode into Atlanta, met the group and found his wife the same day.

Day 2- The next day they went back to town, met the Vatos and came back mid zombie attack.

Day 3- The next day they left for and reached the CDC.

Day 4- The next day they left the CDC.

Season 2

Day 6- Season 2 starts out with Rick talking into the radio to Morgan and he says they lost another one of their group the “day before last. It was her choice…” As he talks, they are loading up and preparing to move out from some sort of barn or something. I don’t know for sure but I assume they get stuck in traffic the same day. Shortly after getting stuck in traffic, Sophia goes missing. They look but give up at dark.

Day 7- The next day they find the church, Carl is shot and Shane/Otis go to the school that night.

Day 8- This weeks episode. Otis memorial in morning, Daryl searching for Sophia, Glen nearly getting done by a zombie, ends up getting done by Maggie instead. Episode ends at night to the sounds of crickets and Rick’s wife peeing.

So, 8 days since Rick met his wife? Any other info to incorporate into a timeline?

There is. The amount of time Rick was in a coma is unclear. Morgan makes a comment in the first episode that the gas lines have been down for a month. One can assume gas lines don’t go down overnight. So, there’s an undetermined amount of time during which Shane and Lori were together.

If Rick has only been back for a short while (I personally think it’s longer than Fubaya states - I think they probably spend a couple of days here and there that are unaccounted for, but no biggie), then it’s DEFINITELY too soon for a positive pregnancy test and have it be Rick’s.

I’m behind on the threads, sorry, but I’m posting here because the other thread is inert.

I had a different take on the big reveal in 2.3 (Save the Last One) when Shane was shaving his head. He shaved his head not to hide the bald spot out of shame, but as a practical matter. Having grabbable hair is a liability in hand to hand combat.

Until I get more evidence that Shane is morally fraught, I’m believing he’s not. Which makes him the most highly evolved survivalist in the group psychologically. There may be some ebbing vestiges left in him of hand wringing over right/wrong, justified/unjustified, good/evil etc., but not much. There’s a new world order and he’s the leader type who knows it.

Rick, on the other hand, was asleep for most of the apocalypse. He needs to spend a few more weeks living this shitty life to catch up to Shane’s way of thinking.

My comment on 2.4: Hello farmer’s daughter…

I like the show and am not one to hate on it, but baby daddy drama is the last thing the show needs. Yuck.

But you go, Glenn! If you gotta be stuck in a zombpocalypse, I guess being stuck with Lauren Cohan is a good place to be.

Using Glenn as human bait was the stupidest decision I’ve seen in a long time by a television character. From what I could see, it wouldn’t have been all that difficult to simply loop the noose around the creature’s neck. They could take turns, turn it into a carnival game.

Glenn needed a home pregnancy test explained to him?

I can’t put my finger on the reason, but Dale is really starting to annoy me. Maybe it is because he is incapable of making more than one facial expression.
mmm

That’s not fair, he has a wide range of facial expressions.

Yeah - what, did she write out its latin name or something? “I need a Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet.”

They had to do it that way so we could get The Big Reveal later at the end of the episode. If she said “Get me a home pregnancy test” right there in the middle of the episode it wouldn’t have been as dramatic. TV Tropes would call it Unnecessary Whispering or something.

It did not help that dragging a dead body, no matter how animated, that had been soaking in water for God know’s how long, over the lip of the well was not going to work. A block and tackle would not be that hard to rig. It is a farm, they must have at least one pulley somewhere.

“Good thing we didn’t do something stupid, like shoot it.”

Glenn’s arrows - why is he down to one? I don’t recall him using them in zombie onslaughts, so why isn’t he retrieving them? Shoot the zombie in the tree, cut him down, grab the arrow.

No “wasting” of an arrow.

At first I figured it could have just said “EPT” or some other brand name which would have been why he asked what it was. But then I figured that would have been stupid. At this point, these people can’t really be brand specific.
Even so, writing it down on a piece of paper was no different then two people sitting down in an office all by themselves and sliding a piece of paper back and forth with some sort of negotiated number on it. It’s really kind of silly.

Said the exact same thing.

I guess maybe he climbed the tree and hung himself from up there and they didn’t want to climb it in the dark with walkers around.

Not sure why it wasn’t retrieved.

:smack:

I know these people are generally stupid, but what was the actual plan once the zombie got over the lip of the well? Presumably the physical laws that allow it to walk around waterlogged in the well mean it can hop up once it gets on the ground. Shouldn’t they have just brought it to the edge and hog-tied it from there rather than having to risk fighting it standing up?

I remember one of the family (Maggie?) showing all the pictures of people who they’ve lost. I wonder if there was a hint at the well guy in there (assuming she did know him — her look was ambiguous but the possibility seemed pretty likely to me).
