Then why do you watch it, I wonder?
I wonder why I watch it, too. As I said earlier, I’m six seasons in, now, and it feels kind of like I’m too far in to get out now (sunk costs, I suppose). I need to see how far this rabbit hole goes?
You’ve put how I feel about it very nicely. Thanks.
I was thinking along similar lines. I’m a recent convert to WD - I binge watched seasons 1-5 this past spring while simultaneously watching the latter half of season 6 as it aired, so I’ve missed stuff here and there, but I was trying to think of what the most harrowing episode was prior to last night. I’d have to say Terminus. But that episode had a strong emotional payoff at the end, and I can’t think of a similar scenario that will come anytime soon. I hope they do find a way to give us some hope, because after the big shocking payoff of last night, I fear the next few episodes may be a trial to slog through.
I agree completely with this. Well, not completely; I wasn’t pissed right off. It did irk me. It’s that strange dichotomy that pisses me off. Sure we can see a eyeball floating in a puddle of Glenn’s brains but god forbid someone says, “fuck,” or we actually see someone fuck. They should pick a side. Is this is R rated (for lack of a better term) or isn’t it?
Anyway … I still love the show. It’s pretty much the only serial I bother to watch when it’s aired. And I’m sure I’ll continue.
The decision to make viewers wait another 20+ minutes to learn what they’d waited months to learn, can’t be called anything less than “sadistic.”
The showrunners out-Neganed Negan.
The character is the very definition of “one-note.” I have nothing against Jeffrey Dean Morgan, but Negan–as written–is every grinning sadist from every two-dimensional melodrama ever written.
Both the show’s theme and the show’s execution were essentially ‘the hyenas rip each other apart in their fight for dominance.’ The audience seems to have offered its collective throat to the showrunners, which is nice for the showrunners, I guess.
As to why some of us watch the show despite having no very good opinion of it: when something is very popular, it’s good to get an idea of why. (I was able to let the spinoff Fear TWD go, thank goodness, as its ratings have been kinda meh.)
It’s not, actually. Not AMC specifically, but fellow basic cable network FX had several shows air the word “fuck” uncensored last season. The People vs OJ had one an episode for several episodes in a row. The most notable was the end of an episode, one of the lawyers held a press conference and the other lawyer, after turning on the tv to watch it, yelled “FUCK!” as they went to credits.
Another FX show also used the word; I don’t think it was The Americans, but not sure. Maybe Fargo? Maybe The Bastard Executioner? I can’t remember, but I definitely remarked on it here on the dope.
Also, regarding the episode, if not for Daryl I would be thinking “Atlanta’s really nice this time of year!”
I thought there was a general consensus that Under the Dome had that particular honor.
Hey, Negan is a sadist. But Rick’s group would have killed, in their sleep, every last member of Negan’s group if they were at that compound that Rick’s group raided.
Oh, I agree. The show presents a world carefully constructed to please people who want to believe that “kill or be killed” is the only valid philosophy of life.
Nihilism for primetime–it sells!
This is known as “thread shitting” on here. If you have no interest in a show, just don’t post to a topic.
Just a small note,

I don’t follow the comics, and I don’t want spoilers, but I’m HOPING that they get to the rebuilding society part soon. I don’t want to watch another 2 or 3 seasons of brutality. I feel like I’ve paid my price.
Come save the day, Wolf Carol!
I’m thinking Vlad the Impaler’s solution, with Lucille.
Agreed. And was this any worse than what we saw happen to Theon Greyjoy on Game of Thrones? I think the violence on this show and GoT is pretty comparable.
Wishing something were so and understanding that biological life is a struggle are two different things. In many cases the police and state are our very own Negans.
This, 100%. It’s a tv show, not a support group.
Given a week, with working vehicles and open highways, they could be literally on the other side of the continent before Negan shows up for his tribute but that would make sense and we can’t have that.
That would mean abandoning Daryl. (See post #87.)
