The Walking Dead: season 9 (open spoilers)

Actually, camouflage and walking with a herd makes sense. Walkers don’t bug you and the living avoid you if your herd’s big enough.
And if you want something that the living possess you can aim your herd toward them and let the walkers do your fighting.

I’d like to know the explanation of how they control the herd.

If a thread title indicates it contains “Open Spoilers” you should probably avoid reading it. just sayin’

It’s only a guess on my part, but it would be similar to a game of Follow The Leader. Wandering left or right while making guttural noises seems to draw walkers to you. Especially if there are other Whisperers in the horde who begin following their leader. Such a method wouldn’t provide pinpoint control, of course. It would explain why the hordes need to circle the same area several times while looking for hidden Eugenes.

I dunno. I presume your charges need 24/7 supervision else they just wander off in multiple directions. I’ve pulled some long shifts, but never days or weeks straight through. And I wasn’t wearing a rotting skin suit! Who’s gonna do that, even in shifts?

And as for using your herd as a means of acquiring stuff you need (food at least) I’m not seeing that either. Your primary targets have to be small groups of survivors like the merry band just introduced to Hilltop. Your herd can “attack” them but unless they’re surrounded they’re going to try to run. And surely they’ll grab the valuable property they’ve got when they bug out. Food being scarce, I bet it’s on the grab first list. Chattels like blankets or pots and pans, on the other hand, are bulky and replaceable if you survive so they’re going to be left behind. But that’s of zero use to actual zombies, and about the same to corpse mimicking whisperers.

So either the whole whisperer thing is a really stupid idea (from the whisperers’ point of view, I mean) or the writers are going to offer a convoluted rationale that, if past performance is any guide, will strain all credulity. I hope not! I keep watching, ever optimistic that the lengthy run of ridiculous plot devices will end. I guess we shall see!

“Open Spoilers” means we can talk about what the show has already aired without using spoiler boxes.

We have a winner. The whisperers are the most comic-booky concept the show has included, and that’s saying a lot. I mean, they had a friggin’ bengal tiger laying there in a room with people, but that was downright reasonable compared to the whisperer nonsense. If you stop to think about trying to actually do it with you and your friends, the logistics quickly become untenable.

Not to mention I question the wisdom of disguising yourself as something people generally try to kill on sight if they can.

Thinking more about this I remembered Michonne’s pets, which were at least equally comic-booky, if not moreso.

But that raised an immediate question: If you can redirect herds as you see fit by moving multiple walkers at the front of the pack in the direction you want the herd to go, and if you’re magically invisible to walkers if you have a couple pets on a leash walking a few feet behind you, couldn’t you redirect herds by just having a handful of people with a couple pets each “drive” the herds where you wanted them to go? (Mainly away from your settlement.)

It would certainly be a more hygienic way to do it.

Or, you just have remote controlled noisemakers located away from your settlement that you activate if a herd is coming.

As I recall, the reason Michone’s zombies didn’t attack is because they had had their arms and jaws cut off. There was some dialogue about that making the zombies not want to attack the living, and rendering them harmless.

That part made sense. And even if they did attack, they had no hands or jaws to attack with anyway so they were harmless even if they weren’t docile. I have no problem with them being actually harmless or them being rendered docile because of that. Somewhat clever writing, even.

The problem I had with her pets is that they camouflaged her to other walkers, so that she could walk around with herds just like whisperers but without any yucky guts smeared on herself. That was double-plus extra stupid.

Finally caught the last episode “Evolution” and I enjoyed it but do have to vent a bit. Note, I have read the comic books up to a certain point of the current story line involving the whisperers. One important part of the show not commented on here was what the whisperer who killed Jesus said. That’s very important to understanding who they are and why they’re leading herds around the area. Although you never know what the show writers will do, I’m assuming the next season will show more of the whisperers and their motivation. Frankly, i prefer them as a new threat over another mustache (or Lucille) twirling ego-manic psychopath cartoonish male villain.

Now, as for killing Jesus. WTF mother f-ckers?!? This show… okay, in the past they’ve killed some significant characters and frankly it was refreshing to see that almost no-one is “safe”. And on the occasions they did kill off someone, maybe you wondered could the show be as good without them but each time there were still compelling characters left and the new characters were just not that interesting or developed. I don’t consider Jesus to be a significant character but there was potential there. At this point they’re really leaving us with no one interesting left except for Carol to root for. Darryl? Yeah, sorry but his one-note never changes character is just dull at this point. He is just not an interesting enough character to be the lead draw for this show. Michonne is… well, frankly her character really doesn’t make any sense at this point. Her being the fiercest advocate for each group being on their own just… it’s like they gave her Maggie’s role now that she has just gone M.I.A. They killed Carl who was really becoming a valuable counter view to Rick. Glenn was one of the heart/souls of the group. This show is slowly bleeding out of characters that make me want to keep watching. King Ezekiel? Meh. Blacksmith Boy? C’mon. Aaron? yawn And frankly…

Comic Book Storyline Reference Inside

If they follow the comic book story with the whispers “marking the boundary” then really what characters will be left to watch on this show? We’ll be down to Mary who grows carrots and that one guy who burns the shit from the latrines.

Well, the second half of the season premiered last night. What did everyone think?

I was intrigued by the way the Whisperers were portrayed and was really creeped out by some of their strategies.

To MeanJoe’s question about what was said when the Whisperer killed Jesus, I think it was You are where you do not belong.

I would have thought Neegan would have put more in his secret stash room besides a motorcycle and some food. At least a few weapons.

Daryl is about the only one left, and Carol, with Michonne (well, the actress) leaving the show. Are they going to try to make Daryl a LEADER? He can’t string two sentences together. He is a lieutenant. He is the number two man in the leadership, he is the muscle. I like Soniqua and Tara and Eugene, Tara is a tough gal. I guess though it’s Carol by default, because these shows always have to have a Central Leader to gather the troops and hammer out plans of action.

Rosita is poised to have a rise. If they can figure out how to deal with Baby. And Aaron seems availiable. Hell why not Judith?

Things that bug me: 1) what is it with Judith and her unearthly powerz? Walking around with a gun, giving orders, wise beyond her single digits of years? I find kids annoying anyway, but this one is super-annoying. 2) . Why is Rosita knocked up at this time? Does this portend something? Other than the three men squabbling amongst themselves. 3) . Jesus (R.I.P.) was always wearing that heavy leather coat in the boiling hot Georgia climate, and Jerry and some of the others are always walking around clad in riot gear armor, even behind the gates of their city. There are no zombies inside, can’t they relax a little and take that hot and heavy stuff off, if they aren’t out there fighting with zombies?

What? Danai Gurira is leaving the show? I had no idea…

I’m going to stand up for Judith. Take a minute to google child soldiers and child labor. The expectations worldwide for children are very different than they are in the Industrialized west. Judith was raised to be tough & smart, and is exactly like I would expect Shane’s daughter to turn out.

Yes, it’s been all over the internets. I knew the minute I heard she was involved in the Black Panther movie, her clock on TWD was ticking. She’s turned into my second favorite character and I will miss her a lot. :frowning:
