I’m currently reading the Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan, I’m up to the Fires of Heaven, and I am enjoying them. I have also heard that Jordan is working on the final book, but it is a race to see if he’ll die before he finishes it.
If he does die he plans to have his wife finish it for him, but whenever I think of that, I think of Christopher Tolkiens Forgotten Tales, which I didn’t like, and I’m worried the same may be the case here. (I know this may never eventuate, and that it is a slightly different situation to the Tolkiens as it wasn’t as though Chris finished LotR for his father)
To those of you are awaiting the last book:
What are your thoughts? Do you think you will be able to find closure on the series if Jordan (male) isn’t the one to write it?
Is it going to be like the last chapters of the Lord of the Rings, say the Scouring of the Shire? Nice to read, but not really necessary? Or is it more going to be like the destruction of the ring?
RJ makes the odd blog entry at wotmania. Last I heard he was responding well to treatment, so I am hopeful that he will finish off the series himself. I would be highly dubious about the book being finished by anyone else, even with copious notes from RJ. I would still read the book however.
I am in that position now with David Gemmell’s Troy series. Sadly Mr Gemmell has died before finishing the third book of the trilogy. I understand his wife is finishing the series based on his notes.
Apparently his Lambda Light Chains level which is linked to his illness is now at 2.7 which is considered a normal amount.
Hopefully he will get to finish his work. Not only will it make many people happy, I would imagine it would be quite a feeling of accomplishment as well.
Tarmon Gai’don is going to be much more like the destruction of the Ring and the final battle at the Morannon than the Scouring of the Shire. It will (if indications so far in the series are correct) be a pitched battle between the forces of good and evil, culminating into a personal confrontation between the Dragon Reborn and the Dark One.
