The Whitlams

Is anyone else here a fan of The Whitlams? I am going to see them on Saturday night. I saw them a few years ago when they were supporting Hunters & Collectors, and they were pretty good then, and they have only got bigger.

I don’t know their stuff that well. I loved H & C though.

H & C are my favourite band. Have you listened to any of Mark Seymour’s solo albums? They are pretty good as well, although I felt a bit older than my 25 years when ‘One Eyed Man’ won
“Best Adult Contemporary” at the ARIAs last year - isn’t that like ‘easy listening’?

I quite like their stuff. They seem to be reaosnably intelligent and willing to say what needs to be said (if only itcan be said in an amusing manner).

Tell us how it went, oh please.

geez… my typing’s all a-flutter this arvo.
apologies extended.

I like the Whitlams. I have their older albums, but not the lastest one. There’s some absolutely classic Australian late-90s songs on them – a few songs most people my age will remember for a long time.

I’ve seen them live before (twice, I think). There was some good sing-along type moments, but mainly a lot of standing, staring and swaying. It was a great night out, just don’t expect to build up a sweat.

Realise however that “The Whitlams” is basically Tim Freedman plus his backing band. Man’s got a bit of an ego.

Hope you have a great time, foxyboxer.

I like their older stuff, but they’ve grown boring of lately. Too much of Tim Freedman believing his own press, I feel. Everlasting Nightcap was their last good album. Everything since has felt a bit bland to me.

But when they’re good, they write some damn good songs. You can’t beat stuff like ‘I Make Hamburgers’ or the Charlies. Even ‘Blow Up The Pokies’ is good of their later stuff.

My claim to fame: I saw them live at my local CD store just before they became huge with ‘No Aphrodisiac’. I’d never heard them before, and there were about ten people in the store. It was a great show, really personal and they did it really well.

Hope the show’s good!
