Any H & C / Mark Seymour fans on the board?
Absolutely.
One of those bands that their music is so well known to me that I’m surprised when I realise they’re not well known outside of Australia.
Yep.
Saw Hunters a couple of times in the mid 90s at the Stardust room at Seagulls - they were awesome live.
I’ve seen Mark Seymour a few of times more recently (with James Reyne (Australian Crawl) - he doesn’t have the same energy as he had when he was fronting Hunters, but the old standards are still great.
Throw Your Arms Around Me is still one of the best songs of all time.
I haven’t thought about that band in years. I loved that song of theirs titled “When the River Runs Dry” (or something close to that).
The first side of the first album is flawlessly good - I grew up with this album and feel it is etched in my DNA. I think I need to explore their later work now.
Cut was the best rock record of the '90s, bar none.
With that said, I still use “Throw Your Arms Around Me” as a test of musical literacy for women I go out with. If she thinks it’s a sweet, romantic ballad we can’t talk music. If she knows it’s a ballad about break-up sex with a stalkerish undertone, I can treat her as a musical adult.
I have seen Seymour and Reyne a couple of times. Really nice shows for not many $$$. They had the same shared backing musicians both times with a great young drummer playing a jazz kit. Sometimes he did a cool trick playing kick drum and hi-hat while playing an accordion instead of using sticks.
That live video where they perform Carry Me is awesome. Everything sounds better live than it does on the studio recording. Terrific band. I like to listen to them right after I listen to Radio Birdman, 'cause I can just hear the influence dripping all across the music.
I liked their cover of Psycho Killer - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TY0jjv3SYlE
