THE WIRE: Polls to determine Favorite Characters, Pre-Poll Discussion

Here’s the big category “The Law” with duplicates marked. I should mention that I’m counting multiple appearances, whether in the same “grouping” or not, of people on the IMDb list as duplicates.

I have quite a few IMDb names not accounted for, and I’m hoping it’s just that I failed to mark them as used somewhere. I have to account for the Paper and School groups you did, and that may get the missing ones down to a small number.

What else do you need me to do with the big IMDb list?

How close do you feel we are to starting some poll threads? Would you like to own that task?

I think we’re pretty close to starting the polls. I’m working on breaking down the Street list into a couple of subgroups.

One will be basically anyone directly involved with “the game,” and then the other group for Miscellaneous street characters like Bubbles, Deacon, and Walon.

Where should Omar’s boyfriends go? Some helped him w/ crimes, but did they all? Should they all just go into the Misc bin?

What about Butchie and Old Face Andre? They helped the criminals but they operated outside of the Game. Same w/ Mouzone and Lamar.

Here is how I was thinking of splitting The Street group:

“The Game”
Michael K. Williams … Omar Little (51 episodes, 2002-2008)
J.D. Williams … Preston Broadus (42 episodes, 2002-2006)
Wood Harris … Avon Barksdale (38 episodes, 2002-2008)
Idris Elba … Russell ‘Stringer’ Bell (37 episodes, 2002-2004)
Jamie Hector … Marlo Stanfield (32 episodes, 2004-2008)
Gbenga Akinnagbe … Chris Partlow / … (30 episodes, 2002-2008)
Anwan Glover … Slim Charles (26 episodes, 2004-2008)
Tray Chaney … Malik ‘Poot’ Carr (25 episodes, 2002-2008)
Felicia Pearson … Felicia ‘Snoop’ Pearson (25 episodes, 2004-2008)
Robert F. Chew … Joseph ‘Proposition Joe’ Stewart (24 episodes, 2002-2008)
Hassan Johnson … Roland ‘Wee-Bey’ Brice (19 episodes, 2002-2008)
Larry Gilliard Jr. … D’Angelo Barksdale (18 episodes, 2002-2003)
Richard Burton … Sean ‘Shamrock’ McGinty / … (16 episodes, 2003-2004)
Kwame Patterson … ‘Monk’ Metcalf (16 episodes, 2006-2008)
Thuliso Dingwall … Kenard (16 episodes, 2004-2008)
Method Man … Melvin ‘Cheese’ Wagstaff / … (13 episodes, 2003-2008)
Michael B. Jordan … Wallace (13 episodes, 2002)

Mia Arnice Chambers … Squeak (4 episodes, 2004)
Melvin Jackson Jr. … Bernard (4 episodes, 2004)

Miscellaneous Street
Alfonso Christian Lover … Old Face Andre (6 episodes, 2006)
Clayton LeBouef … Wendell ‘Orlando’ Blocker (7 episodes, 2002)
DeAndre McCullough … Lamar (3 episodes, 2003-2004)
Michael Potts … Brother Mouzone (7 episodes, 2003-2004)

Wendy Grantham … Shardene Innes (11 episodes, 2002-2008)
S. Robert Morgan … Butchie (10 episodes, 2003-2008)

Andre Royo … Bubbles / … (52 episodes, 2002-2008)
Chad Coleman … Dennis ‘Cutty’ Wise (26 episodes, 2004-2008)

I proofed the Paper and School groups against the IMDb list and that took care of most of the missing actor/characters in the More-than-10-Eps group. I still have a few I need to locate, though. Shouldn’t be a lot longer.

I’d think of Omar’s boyfriends as part of “the game” even if all they did was “behind the scenes.”

Same with Butchie and Old Face Andre.

Just as a rule-of-thumb for size of groups, I’d say something between 12-40 ought not put too big a strain on the voters, but smaller groups would be the objective if possible.

I would hope the Final Poll might have in the range of 50 to select from. That should give every really good character a shot at a mention at least. We can worry about all that after the sub-polls show us what we’re dealing with.

I’d think a couple weeks should be the time to leave the sub-polls open.

What else to consider?

Looks good unless you wanted them in number-of-eps order.

That all sounds good to me. Here are revised “Street” groups:

“The Game”
Michael K. Williams … Omar Little (51 episodes, 2002-2008)
J.D. Williams … Preston Broadus (42 episodes, 2002-2006)
Wood Harris … Avon Barksdale (38 episodes, 2002-2008)
Idris Elba … Russell ‘Stringer’ Bell (37 episodes, 2002-2004)

Tray Chaney … Malik ‘Poot’ Carr (25 episodes, 2002-2008)

Okay. Here are the few dangling IMDb folks:

Michael Ahl “Detective” – I don’t recognize him and Wiki didn’t list him that I could find.

These are barely worth the copy/paste, but here they are:

Thomas W. Stewart … Banquet Attendee / … (12 episodes, 2004-2008)

Jeffrey Lorenzo … Karim Williams (11 episodes, 2006)

Jennifer Rouse … Whiting’s Secretary / … (10 episodes, 2003-2008)

Art Hall … Reporter (10 episodes, 2008)

They wouldn’t be getting my vote. Maybe somebody will be pissed that we left them off. Somebody’s bound to!

If you’re comfortable with what we’ve done, I’d say let 'er rip!

It’s been a good time doing all this. I feel I know a lot of these people much better than I did. Great actor/character work on a great show.

Awesome. I’ll work on a poll tonight, then. Should we add links to each name in the OP of the poll (not in the poll, obviously) so that people can click on the name to see who they are? Or should we just post a catch-all link at the top to the Wiki page of the main subgroup?

I think a link to the Wiki page(s) for the particular poll’s group would do well enough. Having individual links is too much busy work for you. If people need help remembering too many folks, it’s hard to imagine they’re “favorites” anyway.

Use you own judgment about whether to provide a link to this thread in case anybody gets all squrmy about why we selected the way we did. At least they can see that it wasn’t just a random thing.

No matter what, somebody will just have to threadshit it somewhere along the way. That’s life in the big city. Maybe even Baltimore.

Ok, getting ready to post this. How many votes per sub-group do you think is fair?

I think maybe 8-10 votes for the big categories, Street and Police, and then maybe 3 for the small groups like the docks, paper, Misc streets, and school.

Thoughts?

I could swear I answered this over an hour ago. I must have previewed it and not submitted it. What I said was that I was sorry to be late replying to your question. I think you did well in the choice of three per voter per poll on these first polls. Later on more votes will be in order, especially The Street.

Do you need any help from me with the other polls? Have you decided how many there need to be?

Just be sure to save Omar’s poll for last!

No worries. We can post politics next, and then police, miscellaneous, and then the street last? I don’t think I’ve seen the final police/politics lists yet to see what might need to be broken out with them. Have you done those yet?

See Post # 41. I didn’t do any futher breakdown, in case you preferred to subdivide the big thing. Therefore I didn’t pull out just the IMDb format names and sort them down. I’ll be happy to do that if you want to specify the Groups you want from the big set. It was all based on the Wiki logic and I pulled in the sub-outlines wherever they appeared.

Just let me know how I can assist.

If that order you mention (politics, police, miscellaneous, and street) is how you want to go, just say so. I’m a little unclear on the Miscellaneous group, though.

I was just referring to the “Miscellaneous Street” group that has guys like Bubbles and Walon in it. We’ll probably need either a Miscellaneous Police group to catch similar characters on that side, or maybe we’ll just put them all together.

I’m clear now on the Misc category. No sweat.

How about this as a little task for me to do in the next litttle while: I’ll keep the Wiki outline headings for The Law (Post # 41) but strip away everything but the IMDb data. Then you can see how many people we’re dealing with for potential sub-groups, more clearly. Then you decide the sub-groups and I can sort them in number-of-eps order. That work for you?

Here’s a first cut along those lines. I left some obvious trash, just for reference.
Also, the @@ dupes are there for you to select where they best fit in your scheme.

Here is the Politics list as I see it. Also, should Judge Phelan and Rhonda Pearlman be listed here or w/ The Law? Judges are elected, but are DA’s?

I’m think I’ll move Jen Carcetti, along w/ McNulty’s family and Kima’s girlfriend Cheryl over to the Miscellaneous group. How’s everything else look?

I’m starting to wish we’d put Beadie w/ The Docks… but she’ll be ok w/ The Law.

This looks good to me. I have no reason one way or the other to prefer Politics for those two. I believe they figured more in the Law Enforcement track than in Politics as such. If there’s a size of group consideration, let that determine it.

Just so I will have mentioned it, I’m planning to use my IMDb master list as a checking tool, once all the polls have been posted, to spot anybody we may have omitted or included more than once. We may have omitted somebody intentionally, but that would let us be sure we didn’t inadvertently do so.
