Got me thinking - of the top of my head I can’t think of any other single “thing” that I own that I feel so strongly is the best of it’s kind. And even tho this is a stupid, inexpensive little “thing” in the grand scheme of things, I derive no small enjoyment from my belief that when I am using it, I am using the best possible thing for its purpose.
(Of course, I readily admit that my strong opinion would be of little relevance to someone who dod not do at least some amount of outside gardening requiring some amount of watering other than with a hose…)
So what are your nominatons for the world’s best of their kind?
To restrict things a bit, can we try to avoid things that are primarily strong personal preferences? May be impossible, but may be worth a try to list things for which you feel you can make a strong factual argument.
That is a very nice watering can. I may buy one myself.
The only thing I can think of for me is a wine bottle opener given as a present from a wealthy European gourmet in the high-end food and wine industry. I have no idea how to search for a picture but just trust me that it is beautiful and works flawlessly every single time. It never breaks a cork and the cork removal mechanism is a lever that a child could do. You don’t even need to lift the bottle off of the table.
My parents popped for this pepper mill as a Christmas gift at least five years ago and perhaps more. Every time I’ve had occasion to use another mill in a restaurant or someone else’s kitchen I’ve missed the one sitting in my cabinet at home. The mill has never clogged and I’ve never had to readjust the grind setting once I found what I liked. I’d continue describing it myself, but that would cheat you out of reading this awesome review of it on Amazon, excerpted below:
I have no desire to suggest this is THE WORLD’S BEST, but perhaps if one cared to supplement your offering with a second, smaller mill, we find this one provides exceptional, one-handed service.
The world’s best laundry item is Sock-locks which keep pairs of socks together in the wash. No more sorting pairs later, and no singletons stuck to the dryer’s ceiling. http://www.sock-locks.com/
World’s best cleaning aid is the Black & Decker Scumbuster power scrub brush,Robot or human?
On the subject of watering cans, I recently bought this one and find it quite nice. It seems well balanced, has two handles, and has a good capacity for my purposes (two gallons, rather than three like yours). Plus, I like that the hole in top is quite small; keeps sloshing to a minimum.
I used to have the world’s best skillet. It was wonderful: a non-stick interior that you could use metal utensils on, an oven-safe handle, steep sides to keep stuff in, and a nice heavy base that heated evenly. When we got new cookware, my wife asked me to give it to her sister. I miss that skillet. snif.
You are certainly welcome to your opinion - even tho in this instance you happen t be WRONG!
For me, the 3g capacity is key, tho I also prefer the single “French-style” handle. Smaller points, yours looks to have a screw-on rose, whereas I prefer mine’s slip-on. Not to mention that yours bears shameless advertising! (Gotta love that price, tho!)
I acknowledge that 3g might be a tad unwieldy for many persons. I get a kick out of the website that says something like “buy 2 to be balanced!” Yeah, good luck finding more than a few folk who feel like lugging 2 of those around at the same time!
Do you know how many unicorns they killed to make those pepper mills?!
Nice, I can finally grind pepper and do you-know-what* at the same time.
‘You-know-what’ being stirring the sauce*, you damn sickos.
**You sickos! By ‘Stirring the sauce’ I just mean moving it around with a whisk until … ah heck with it, I’m talking about masturbating while I grind pepper.
I’ve noticed that for bicycling accessories there tends to be a clear “best” in each category.
The best portable bicycle pump is the Topeak Road Morph G. It’s a unique design, it’s actually a mini floor pump. It easily pumps up to 120 psi, and has a built-in gauge.
The best waterproof panniers are Ortlieb Backrollers. I’ve had the same pair for almost 10 years now, used for daily commuting much of the time, and not a sign of tearing or water leaks.
The best affordable taillight is the Planet Bike Blinky Superflash. It’s brighter than any <$100 taillight, and only costs about $25. It’s well built.
The best not-so-affordable taillight is the Dinotte 140R-LI. It’s so bright that I recommend using the lowest brightness setting for group rides and multi-use paths.
Please. I have a SSC P7 flashlight that’s nearly as bright as a car headlight. I still prefer the one I linked to. It will go for two weeks of nighttime dog walks on a charge, isn’t too big, doesn’t use fabulously expensive batteries, and doesn’t cost $200. I think it’s great.
That’s more subjective, depends on if your priorities - e.g. do you need a light to see the road, or is it more important to be seen? But the aforementioned Dinotte makes nice headlights, it’s probably the best for riding in traffic (i.e. emphasis on being seen), if you don’t mind the cost, and if you don’t mind having to charge the battery regularly.
If you don’t want to bother with a battery, Schmidt dynamos are the best in the world, though the Shimano costs less than half and is almost as good. Lumotec and Schmidt make good lights for hub dynamos.
I’m afraid I don’t have any insights on less expensive headlights. IMO it’s worth spending the money for a good headlight - it can save your life.
