the WTC tragedy and time zones

I’m in California. We’re on daylight Savings Time right now (one hour ahead). So is New York only two hours ahead of us, or three? Do they have DST too?

In other words, if the attack came at 8:50 for New Yorkers, was that 5:50 or 6:50 for me? (My brother woke me up at 7:30 to tell me what happened.)

Of course, I could have just asked Mom in New York what time it was when I called her, but I forgot. Too many other things to talk about.

NY should be 3 ahead of you.

So, New York is on Daylight Savings Time too?

As far as I know, the only state in the continental US that does not use DST is Indiana. When it’s 12 noon in NYC it’s 11 am in Indiana (during DST, that is).

Actually, most of Arizona does not observe DST, the exception is the Navajo reservation which does observe DST. However, the Hopi Partitioned Land, within the Navajo reservation, follows the Arizona standard time.
Hawaii, which is not in the continental US, also does not observe DST.

The federal law says you have 3 choices: (A) All the state observes DST; (B) All the state observes standard time all year, or © if a time zone splits the state, the eastern half can ignore DST.

Neither Arizona nor Hawaii observe DST. Indiana elected the option that allows it to split. Eastern Indiana does not observe DST, they observe Eastern Stabdard Time. Two counties in the Central time zone DO observe DST. Hence, all of Indiana is either CDT or EST, which are both the same time. When western Indiana falls back to CST, Indiana will have split time as the time zone boundary runs throught the state.

As for Arizona, some areas ignore the rule and observe DST anyway. I also hear that parts of Indiana near Louisville ignore the Indiana law and observe EDT to be in sync with Louisville.

Where do you get “two counties”? All of Indiana’s counties in the Central time zone (ten of them) observe DST. Plus, five of the counties in the Eastern time zone unofficially observe DST.

So right now, there are some Indiana counties on CDT, some on EST, and some, unofficially, on EDT.

Mea Culpa. Those parts of Indiana in the Central Time Zone are in TWO non-contiguous CORNERS: some counties in the northwest section of Indiana, and some counties in the southwest section.
