The more I think about it, the less sense it makes (still talking about Sunday’s ep).
So Tad has access to an “ARC”, a craft that violates any number of known laws of physics, a craft whose mere existence, if revealed, would blow mere Area 51 rumors out of the water, and he doesn’t tell anyone? What is he waiting for?
And, how did he get it? Is it his? Is it owned by “them”? If so, why did “they” blow it up?
Tad has to be in on “it”. He’s part of the disinformation campaign. Therefore, the aliens are real again.
I loved the second episode, but I do find myself with some questions.
So…not only are the X-files back open, but Mulder and Scully are both back in the FBI and are running it again? I did not see a scene where they sat at Skinner’s desk and he told them the X-files are open and he wants them back. I feel they needed something like this.
If they are back, does this mean Scully willingly left her job helping kids born with defects to work the X-files? If she did, was this explained? I thought she was so disgusted with the X-files and the government trying to kill her and her son, she would never return. Did the show give us any indication of why she went back?
They aren’t. The final episode of this mini-season is the part 2.
These are examples of things that I find makes this reboot look incredibly dated. They throw these lines in to make the show seem current, but I think Mulder would be all over social media. Based on his hero status back in the day by UFO folks, today he’d be a social media God. He’d be using Twitter, Snapchat, etc to gather information about alien sightings, and people would be contacting him constantly. He’d make some crack about Uber storing personal information for the government. Facebook would be ripped apart by him. He’d be paranoid as hell about Smart Phones.
Another thing that was hard to get past. Scully especially to me looks wooden as can be, probably because her face is frozen solid.
Not to mention the fact that Mulder, Scully, and Skinner (and I’m pretty sure Doggett and Reyes too) have seen ARCs before. That shouldn’t be the thing that sends Mulder in a wild new direction.
Watched the first episode last night. It was disjointed and seemed like the characters were just wandering around, but man it was good to be back with Mulder and Scully.
Liked the second one a lot better than the first. I mean, there was an actual mystery there, not just on-the-nose expositional UFOs, aliens, ARV, death ray and so on. I think that was maybe what I missed most with the last one: there just wasn’t any sense of the unknown.
That was much better, although I thought it ended kind of abruptly. I always much preferred the Monster of the Week episodes over the conspiracy story arc, in the initial run.
One thing that’s still a bit jarring is their voices. I realize people age and voices change, but Mulder sounds like he’s been smoking unfiltered Camels for 15 years and Scully has some major old-lady vocal fry going on. Is it just me or does Gillian Anderson sound really congested, too? I didn’t notice it in Hannibal or The Fall, but at times she sounds oddly nasal.
Apparently some of these middle stand-alone episodes are airing in a different order than was originally intended. That may be why it seemed like Mulder and Scully were back on the job all of a sudden in the second episode.
Apparently, they are no longer together in the new series? How the hell did that happen?
I do worry about the show, in the 15 or so years its been off the air, actual real life has shown conspiracy theories waaaay worse then anything they could dream up. Its kinda dated.
Chris Carter has said 9/11 was a huge part in making the show seem less relevant. With real plans implemented like that, X-files conspiracies seemed less scary.
I dunno. I also think 9 seasons was just way too long.
Glad to see Mulder and Scully back again, and I’ll probably keep watching, but I’ve found the new season a disappointment, all in all.
Not a bad analogy.
Yeah. He was awfully quick to jettison a lifetime of work and beliefs just because of what she said.
All fair points. I laughed out loud at the reference to FEMA internment camps - can anyone take that seriously after Katrina? The show was warning of the Syndicate’s insidiously clever, coordinated any-day-now takeover of human civilization in the mid-Nineties, for crissakes. Guess the schedule has slipped a bit, huh, guys?
I noticed that, too. I don’t think Duchovny’s heart is in it anymore. Maybe he’s just older and can’t convincingly play an idealistic crusader anymore - going through the motions and picking up his paycheck, instead.
Hmm. Hadn’t thought of that. Could be - unless he wanted to stay under the radar.
Yes. From what I’ve seen–and I’m a HUGE x-files fan–there’s nothing special yet with the new episodes. Google search for “best monster of the week x files” and you’ll see the series’ strengths.
